Noob Questions

Postby eldonkr » Sat Dec 26, 2009 2:41 am

I figured it would be a better idea to make one thread here with the few questions I had than to make multiple threads in 2.3. If I'm wrong, I apologize, please move this thread if need be.

Here are a few questions/problems I have:

1. I can't seem to upgrade to Firefox 3.5. I've used synaptics to upgrade it and it still says I'm using 3.0
2. I used Add/Remove applications to add skype. But I don't know where to find it now.
3.Does Pidgin have webcam/photo share options?

Those are the few questions I can think of right now. Thanks in advance for assistance.

1.You should manage to upgrade FF from synaptic,or you can try through ubuntu-tweak>third-party software.
2.For skype you must have the medibuntu repositories added;try through ultamatix too.

3.No webcam option in Pidgin, try GyachEmproved instead.

Hope it helps out. ;) <BREW>

1. I've still been using Firefox. I didn't know I'd have to use Shiretoko to get 3.5, my bad.

2. I got skype from their website, but I didn't think I should install it because they didn't have a build for 9.04. My friend told me it works so now I have skype.

3. I followed the instructions to add that to my software sources and I keep getting this message:

Code: Select all
W: GPG error: http://ppa.launchpad.net jaunty Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 7D2C7A23BF810CD5
W: You may want to run apt-get update to correct these problems

I get that message after I type sudo apt-get update and I'm following these instructions:

https://launchpad.net/+help/soyuz/ppa-sources-list.html

am I doing something wrong?

4. What are the minimum requirements for 9.10?

ok, new questions

1. is there any messenger that comes with 2.3 that can webcam?
2.Whats the minimum system requirements for 2.4 and how stable is 9.10

I'd like to put that on my laptop but I don't want something that I'll have problems with or that my laptop won't be able to handle. It's pretty old.

3. Can anybody recommend some really cool/useful repos?

Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Kola System Requirements:

Code: Select all
Minimum System Requirements :

Processor : 1Ghz Frequency

Memory : 512MB

Free Disk Space : 8GB

CD/DVD-Writer

Re your other question, yes ubuntu 9.10 is stable enough to run on any pc/note book!!

As for your repo question, it all depends on what your interested in, what maybe useful for me maybe point less to you. The ubuntu and ultamatix internal repo should be good enough for you!!

ok, thanks. I think I'm starting to get the hang of it.

If I choose to go to 9.10 should I use the update manager or should I just go grab an .ISO of UE2.4?

How is 9.10 different from 9.04? How is 2.3 Different from 2.4?

I will suggest that you download Ultimate Edition 2.5 instead as it comes with much more tools, candy and updates!! Alot of the difference between the distros or mostly under the hood and a bit of rearranging. You can use google to help you answer most of these questions that you need answers to!!

Thanks for the advice. Anywho, I've discovered something new.

I tried to make a wordpress post last night and it's quite challenging. The text field is while, like usual. And the text also shows up as white, this also happens in certain search fields online and in a few other places. Any way to get rid of this white on white?

Also, I'm having issues with Shiretoko remembering my passwords. My email, homepage, facebook, etc. Everything that requires a log in that I use regularly. It's not remembering my passwords. I'll tell it to remember me with the check boxes on login and that thing that pops up that asks if I want it to remember my passwords. And It's not doing it.

Look at the screen shot below for the fix for your color scheme problem!! As for your password issue if your using firefox, go to tools on the menu bar then "clear recent history" then select to clean everything then restart your machine and try again!!
