live dvd difference to normal install?

Postby ninhalo5 » Wed Oct 21, 2009 3:55 pm

Hi everyone, I just wanted to say I am a newborn noob to linux, I've tried a few systems and almost settled on one until my friend showed me the ultimate (which it is)
I am having some issues though and I've tried looking around the net to see if I can find my answer, but I can not.
my issue has been running around and has been talked about but the answers all seem to be broken and that is why does my WiFi drivers not install?

This is what I think is strange, I have both ultimate 2.3 on DVD's the 32 bit and the 64 bit,
when using the 32 bit liveDVD everything runs perfectly. I have my WiFi and it runs great however if I click on the install button on the desktop and it installs the OS directly onto the system I lose my WiFi the same goes for the 64 bit version no WiFi on either the liveDVD or a full install.
What is the difference here?
Why is the driver; the DVD is using not being transferred to my comp?
Also as my friend has noticed (I have not) every program on the liveDVD is not being installed to the full install.

I have ran a sudo lshw -C network command here are both outcomes:

So any ideas on what to do now? other than leave the DVD in the Rom :D

Thanks

Hello ninhalo5 and welcome to the U.E Forum.

You have 64 bit Architecture machine.
and to get the WiFi Direct that will not work for you.
you need to update/upgrade your machine first with synaptic.
And the process has to be done with wire not with WiFi .
The drivers are not install in Advance on your machine from the start.
you can underhand way right= the disc can not cover all the drivers to any card.
So if you run the 64 bit with wired connection and update your machine,
Then your card will get the Driver for the card along the process.
BTW-there is no problem to run 32 bit on your machine, just to let you know.
32bit has there Drivers-and 64bit has there Drivers.

Thank you for the response.
Curious though why does it work fine when I'm running the OS off the liveDVD and not via install?

It seems strange to me that I can do such a thing with using only a disk, though I am still in a Windoze way of thinking.

Now to figure out how to connect this by wire haven't done that in years lol.

I should be able to just plug a line into the back of the router and sign in that way correct?

oh BTW am I able to download the files from my PC and transfer them from a USB drive?

A fit will be made around here if I touch the router lol

Cheers
Jeff

That is correct.
Just make sure that you install the system with DHCP connection.
This is half way that you know of right?
well here we start to learn something new for today.
UNentbootin, download this software to you MS.
then when you have the ISO on your Desktop, there you can install it on the usb flash.
then change your boot to start from flash Drive=go for the installation of the U.E ;)

OK I can't do any of that either next step I guess is to take the #@$#%$^& laptop outside and run it over a few times with the car :x

it won't hook up to the router. dhcp is on, everything is on.
I have a cable modem so I can not hook directly to the phone line.
I can not install anything via synaptic cause it needs to downloand and I can't get connected.
The UNetbootin fails every time and takes me to a initramfs command prompt (BusyBox v1.1.3 (Debian 1:1.1.3-3ubuntu3) Built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built in commands.
(initramfs)_)

I've downloaded the files 3 times 2x in linux and 1 in windows and placed them on a usb flash and ran both default and OEM settings both come up the same way.

I don't know what else to do. I do have a usb wireless card I can try.
Its just very aggravating that everything works perfectly when I'm running off the dvd.
And as stupid as windoze is at least getting online is only 3 steps, plug in wire on router, plug other end in laptop, click connect. no problem

Being that everything works perfectly from the DVD is there a way I can extract the files being used and apply them to the full install?

Thanks
Jeff

Jeff looks like you miss the point here.

1- you have at this point working MS right?
you download the package for the MS right.
then install the package on MS system.

2- you have the U.E ISO right?
you insert your flash Drive, and open the UNetbootin and direct the installation
to your flash Drive!
you must have formated flash drive ready.
3- after that process was done, then you can install the U.E system on your machine.
you have to change the BIOS to boot from the flash Drive.

Being that everything works perfectly from the DVD is there a way I can extract the files being used and apply them to the full install?

If you have the U.E DVD,
you need to make unallocated partition for the U.E installation.
you can download Parted magic, burn it on Disc,Restart your machine with the Disc inside.
then let it go to Desktop, the you have Partition Editor.
you have to give the U.E 30-40 Gig space for all the installation /update/upgrade.
hope that clear the things for you.

Parted Magic:

Thank you
Amir.

yes, yes, I downloaded the installer then directed it to my usb flash

I have the Ultimate Edition iso burnt to DVD.
I placed in the flash drive turned on the comp and hit F12 then boot to usb memory

3- after that process was done, then you can install the U.E system on your machine.
you have to change the BIOS to boot from the flash Drive.
when the menu comes on I select the default setting and a Ubuntu flash screen comes up for about 5 minutes then dissappears to a termanal type prompt with (BusyBox v1.1.3 (Debian 1:1.1.3-3ubuntu3) Built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built in commands.
(initramfs)

Maybe I downloaded the wrong set? I picked Ubuntu 9.04_Live

I tried downloading the files on my desktop and transferring them to the flash drive and I downloaded the linux using the connection I got with my DVD and reinstalled the files that way. nothing seemed to work.

The process seems very easy but getting my laptop to agree with me isn't as much :)

Maybe I downloaded the wrong set? I picked Ubuntu 9.04_Live
:?

WE ARE ULTIMATE EDITION NOT UBUNTU BETA 9.04
Here is the right place to download the DVD:
http://ultimateedition.info/ultimate-ed ... /#download

when the menu comes on I select the default setting and a Ubuntu flash screen comes up for about 5 minutes then dissappears to a termanal type prompt with (BusyBox v1.1.3 (Debian 1:1.1.3-3ubuntu3) Built-in shell (ash)

you can not install Linux on MS file system!!
That is your problem to begin with.
so I have explain to you what you have to do on the process.
and the extracting the files to the USB will not do the work.
This is software that has to be install on system=not boot system.
So please follow the process with Parted Magic ,make partition for the Ultimate Edition
Not for Ubuntu.

yes, I know that, this is where I got the iso file for Ultimate Edition originally, but the UNETbootin installer give's me a list to choose from, Ultimate Edition is not a choice or am I supposed to link the Ultimate Edition ISO there? maybe that is part of the problem?

My system is a dual boot which unfortunately I still need windows.
Am I understanding correctly that I can not use the USB because windows is still installed on the laptop? and that I will have to take the Parted Magic route?
That kinda worries me, a program that I've never used before and partitions don't go together very well :)

Sorry Amir, I'm not trying to make this difficult, I really want to know how to do this and I am trying to understand.

Here is how to do things with Pated Magic:
