Ultimate Repos for Ubuntu 8.04 (64)

The Ultimate Guide for the rest of us

Ultimate Repos for Ubuntu 8.04 (64)

Postby gael33 » Sat Apr 11, 2009 7:09 am

Is it safe to download the Ultimate Repo's into Ubuntu 8.04 (64)?
I have Ultimate on our kids computer but not on my office computer. I like the flexibility and customization of Ultimate and would like to brighten up Ubuntu without replacing it. If I download the repo's to my office computer will it be okay? I don't want to mess things up.

gael ... relative newbie ;)

I wouldn't since it is a work computer. I know how systems admin can get about 'customizing'.

Thanks for replying ... the point is is that I am the administrator as I work for myself ;)
The Computer is my own property.
May I repeat my question and ask ... is it safe to add the Ultimate Repos to Ubuntu 8.04 (64).
I take it nothing will crash or get mangled ... as you only point to the admin issue as an objection to installing the Repo, am I correct?

Well, since you are the boss let me lay it out for you. Ultimate 2.0 and 2.1 are based on Intrepid 8.10 not 8.04. They use a different kernel and the software for 8.10 has all been updated, removed, or modified so you will probably run into dependency issues if you add the Ultimate/Intrepid repos. Either update your work pc to 8.10 or don't bother. Keep in mind, Ultimate is not Ubuntu, it is based on it. It is like Debian and Ubuntu. Ubuntu is a Debian based system but a lot of the Debian packages will not work with it and visa versa. Mixing 8.04 Ubuntu with Ultimate 8.10 is a recipe for disaster in my opinion. If you are feeling adventurous and know Linux really well, go for it. Be prepared to fix stuff and track down dependencies and probably re-install your operating system.Think of it as Windows '98 and 2000. Some things will work and some things will not.
