Installing drivers for Via Chrome9 IGP Chipset

The Ultimate Guide for the rest of us

Installing drivers for Via Chrome9 IGP Chipset

Postby mubeensgh » Tue Mar 24, 2009 4:24 am

Hi

I have a Gigabyte mobo with Via Chrome9 integrated graphics. Worked quite well in windows XP. After switching to Ultimate Edition 2.1, I wanted to install the linux driver for it from here: here.

I installed it from terminal [in sudo mode], this was the result

install the via driver!
............cp: cannot create regular file `/lib/modules/2.6.27-12-generic/kernel/drivers/char/drm/': Is a directory
chmod: cannot access `/lib/modules/2.6.27-12-generic/kernel/drivers/char/drm/drm.ko': No such file or directory
cp: cannot create regular file `/lib/modules/2.6.27-12-generic/kernel/drivers/char/drm/': Is a directory
chmod: cannot access `/lib/modules/2.6.27-12-generic/kernel/drivers/char/drm/via_chrome9.ko': No such file or directory
......done!
Original X config file was saved as /etc/X11/xorg.conf.viabak

then i restarted the computer and X window System crashed leaving me with a command prompt. Since i am a linux noob and not knowing ow to restart X from command prompt, i promptly reinstalled Ultimate Edition 2.1 again.

Could anyone help me install the correct drivers? the stock drivers that came with Ultimate Edition is working well but with no 3d acceleration i cant play nexuiz or other 3d games.

Thanks in advance

My system specs:

Intel celeron 3.06 GHz
Gigabyte GA-VM900M Motherboard
Seagate SATA 320GB Hard Disk
2GB DDR2 PC2-5300 667MHz RAM [256MB Shared to Integrated Graphics]
Via P4M900 Integrated Graphics

EDIT: sorry for double posting... i didn't know all posts had to be moderated before it appears in the board.

It will work with Windows because you can get the drivers. Via chipsets and Linux don't always play nice together. Go to their website and see if they make Linux drivers for Debian. If not you may be able to find them at driver guide(registration required).

Thanks Cell for the info and the links:

well i tried your method and xserver crashed upon reboot [writing this reply form LIVE CD]. and pch.shot was right. The drivers for Chrome9 is still under development so i cant install it in Ultimate Edition

I went to http://www.openchrome.org/ like Cell posted but the 3d acceleration is not implemented yet in the project =(.

so i will wait either for the driver upgrade or my computer upgrade where i will buy an ATI Radeon card.. =)

thanks for all your help

on the other hand my Brother printer installation was a roller coaster ride and i eventually managed to make it print a test page. I will post a How-To soon.

oh yeah can anyone tell me how to reset xserver back to as it was right after installation so i dont have to re-install everytime xserver crases?

Thanks everyone

If you are considering a new gpu go with Nvidia for Linux. You will get much better support and it is much easier to setup. Even sli, if you decide to go that route. I have an easy tutorial to get the most out of a Nvidia card. Support for ATI used to be good with Linux, but not so much anymore for some strange reason.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean. Are you talking your video driver. You can have it use the vesa video drivers by hitting Esc at the boot prompt and adding VGA=791(which will give you 1024x768 resolution) at the end of the kernel line.
