Ultimate Edition Forum

I have checked out the Ultimate Edition Live DVD and was very impressed!
I've used Linux now for about 5 years. I started with KDE (Kubuntu), and then after about a year I installed Gnome (Ubuntu desktop). I switched back and forth between the two for a few years, but now have used Ubuntu for the past couple years. Since I have never reinstalled (all original and updates) you can imagine that some things are not working correctly and there's lots of unnecessary stuff on my HD... for example, Compiz isn't working... tried everything but can't fix... also many other glitches in the system. So... I'm considering switching to Ultimate Edition.
My question:
I think there may be a couple options for moving to Ultimate Edition
1) create a new root partition and install Ultimate Edition there (I also have a home and boot partition) Effectively this would be a dual boot system.
2) delete all files in the root partition and then install Ultimate Edition
3) backup the home partition, wipe everything including partitions on the HD, install Ultimate Edition and then move files from the backup as needed.
Which option would be most efficient in eliminating my existing glitches (eg. python config problems, install errors, etc), but minimize the amount of time I spend reconfiguring and reinstalling packages?

What version of ultimate edition are you intending to install?

are you doing a laptop or desktop install?

I personally have two versions installed on my laptop. so it is quite possible to have a dual boot system. also, for reinstalling packages,I believe you can have all your packages saved to disk and then re-installed from there. or, in my case, I mounted the other OS. This is seen as a media storage area just have to log into the other side.


another question, are you doing 32 or 64 bit install? it may be better to reinstall fresh packages, the reason is, you are sure to get the most updated version, not to mention, the old may be corrupted or broken.

1.9 ultimate edition is pretty rock solid right now, so is 2.0 also of note, any major cannonical issues will be the same in ultimate edition. I am refering to kernel. please feel free to search through out our humble forums, and hopefully recieve a few insightfull tips that may assist you in your endeavor.

If everything is working with the live disc(all your hardware), move all the data you want to save to another hard drive and do a clean install putting Ultimate on one hard drive(the fastest and newest) and your data on the other. If you have a 2 gig usb flash drive install using this(it will avoid disc errors):

In these circumstances I vote for 3 too.

After some thought, I think your option is the best. For one thing, I like the idea of backing up an image of my current drive so that I can revert to my "old system" if the new install doesn't proceed smoothly. Now I have to figure out what package/program to use to transfer my files (suggestions??) and what the commands would be (suggestions??) -- I have a huge usb drive that is currently empty, which would work well for this. I really like the idea of having the "backup" become a "media drive" that I would log into. How do I do this (I currently have partitions that are always accessible and would like to change them to this "media drive" system too)?

As far as making an image of your operating system I don't have a clue with Linux. I keep all my stuff on my Windows box and just re-install Linux when I want a change. My LInux box only has an operating system and software, nothing else. I access the Windows partitions through Samba. I use Macrium to make an image of my Windows install and make a restore disc.
