how to Get 60Hz Refresh Rate during install

Postby kamrananvaar » Sun Nov 30, 2008 3:43 am

hi
I use an intel 915 gav motherboard and my monitor only supports a 60Hz refresh rate- it works fine in win xp but as soon as i try to install linux- ubuntu,pclinuxos, mint it blanks out (linux automatically uses 75 hz for intel 915gav motherboard)sometimes i get to the live session ,whereas sometimes halfway through the installation the monitor flickers and goes into standby mode .I have tried safe mode in ultimate edition2.0 but same thing happens , how do i limit it to a refresh rate of 60hz and resolution of 1024x768
thanks

The easiest way:
Get to your desktop from the live DVD
Hit the little U.E logo in the upper left corner
Select System/ Preferences/ Screen Resolution
and set it to 1024 x 768 with a refresh rate of 60Hz
hit apply
Then do your install.

If for some reason you can't make it to your desktop, keep reading.

This little snippet was copied from Laptop Installs here in Newbie's Corner. And is just an example
__________________________________________________________________________
Example: Adding the vga=771 option
Change
boot: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.15-26-k7 root=/dev/hda1 ro quiet splash

to
boot: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.15-26-k7 root=/dev/hda1 ro quiet splash vga=771

Kernel Options
These options are used by the kernel, and will apply to any system at any time. The file "Documentation/kernel-parameters.txt" in the relevant linux-source package provides more information.

vga=xxx
Set your Framebuffer resolution to VESA mode xxx. Check here for a list of possible modes.
Example:vga=792 will give you 1024x768 @ 24-bit color
...........vga=795................1280x1024 @ 24-bit color
________________________________________________________________________

So from the example above, add vga=792 to your boot options.

At the first boot screen with the big Ultimate Edition logo,
Hit F6
Hit the <Spacebar>
and add vga=792
Hit enter and go get a cup of coffee until it completely loads.

Because of the new changes, it might still be necessary to change your Screen Resolution that was described at the beginning of this post.
