You asked a good question.

1) Download Ultimate Edition, check the MD5sum, Burn to DVD at x4 speed or slower.

2) Boot from the Ultimate Edition DVD,
Let it load completely,
Open Partition Editor System/Administration/Partition Editor

Shrink the primary partition to leave room for Ultimate Edition
Hit the Apply button
when that's done
Create a 2 or 3Gb /swap partition at the end of the drive
Format it ext3
Leave the section for Ultimate Edition Unallocated
Hit the Apply button
When it's complete, close Partition Editor

Hit the Install Icon and follow the steps

When it gets to the Partition section
Select Guided, use unallocated space
Let it finish the installation.
Grub (Grand Unified Bootloader) will detect your Windows OS and give you the option of which OS you want to use, each time you boot up.

You are now duel booting!

***Note***
A few things to remember...
To optimize your Ultimate Edition experience, do your install in this order.
1) Install Ultimate Edition
2) After the install is complete, Hit the Upgrade Icon and babysit the process.
3) Only after the Upgrade process is complete, install your video drivers with Envy or EnvyNG

2nd Box: XP (dusty)
3rd Box: Stable Media box Ultimate Edition 1.8 x64 with XBMC

Thought that I would post this, while its fresh in my mind still. There is something wrong with the desktop upgrade icon/ script. It will wipe out your sources.list and replace it with one that doesn't include the Ultimate Edition repo. So, after you hit the icon on the desktop you will have to go back in to edit your sources.list and add the repo back in to the bottom of the list.
Edit the sources.list:
Code: Select all
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

add this to the bottom of the list and click 'save' and close out the text editor:
Code: Select all
deb http://repoubuntusoftware.info/ harty all

Then go back into a terminal and update
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get update

I've already brought it to TheeMahns attention and I'm sure it will be corrected shortly.

i did it in what i personally think is an easier way :)

i downloaded UU and PowerIso wich is a program that basically makes windows think that any iso file is already in a drive.

i set UU.iso in a virtually drive (i guarantee that you can google a FAQ on how to do this) and choose install into windows :) works flawless for me.

hope somebody can use this

Can you shrink the other partitions without losing the data on them?

When I got the new HDD (300 GB physical), I created a windows boot partition of 40 GB (ntfs), a data partition of 255 GB (ntfs), and left the rest as Free Space for installing Linux later. I thought 5 GB should be enough, considering I've managed fine with hardy on those 5 GB.

When trying to install UE2, it says it wants more disk space than those 5 GB, I even tried to select no swap. I didn't want to shrink the 255 GB data partition, as far as I knew you cant change partition sizes without losing the data on them.

Any suggestions?

Yes it can be. From windows you can use Partition Magic from Symantec now, I heard,I think it will be more familiar to you. Here: http://www.symantec.com/norton/partitionmagic .
Intel H61 ASrock H61M-VS Motherboard,
Cpu Intel Ci3 13-2100 3.10Ghz 64bit 3MB Box,

A bit off topic, I don't want to install natively, rather I want to try to install Ultimate Edition inside windows. I tried but the installer for wubi crashed on my vista laptop. any insights? thanks
