32-Bit V.S 64-Bit OS

The Ultimate Guide for the rest of us

32-Bit V.S 64-Bit OS

Postby saimon7 » Wed Jul 02, 2008 10:04 am

Ok this may be the biggest n00b question but here I go:

What is the difference in between Ultimate 32-Bit verses Ultimate 64-Bit?
My friend wants to install 64-Bit Version but I use 32-Bit version and I had bad experience with 64-Bit Version back in 2006

So can any one give me any advice on why I should I even look at 64-Bit Version? :geek:

So far I know: :|
1.) 32-Bit always out preforms 64-Bit specially in game wise but not at higher screen resolution.
2.) More softwares in 32-Bit Version
3.) More Compiz 3rd party plug ins on 32-Bit Version
4.) CPU runs a little hotter at 64-Bit Version

Please correct me if I am wrong. :?

That's a real good question.

Back in 06 I was pretty disgusted with 64bit myself.
You are right, back then 64bit gaming was nonexistent and the selection of apps was pretty slim.
Linux has made great progress, where 64bit is concerned, in the last year.
Granted Gaming is slim and not all of the apps have been ported to 64bit but you will be pleasantly surprised at the amount that has been. Undoubtedly the greatest benefit and most noticeable effect will be in speed.
Lets take loading your music in Amarok as an example, for those with a sizable amount of music, what used to take 1 core (in 32bit) an hour, can take less than 10 minutes with 4 cores.
The average app opens quicker and operates noticeably faster.
The processor intensive apps will become a thing of joy, much faster with more cores.

1.) 32-Bit always out preforms 64-Bit specially in game wise but not at higher screen resolution.
64bit now kicks 32bit to the curb, except in gaming (due to the limited # of x64 games)

2.) More softwares in 32-Bit Version
Yes but anymore it's not a large difference.

3.) More Compiz 3rd party plug ins on 32-Bit Version
Yes but x64 is getting more & more plugins all the time

4.) CPU runs a little hotter at 64-Bit Version
Not surprising. only using 1 core on a duel or quad core processor is kind of like idling your car as apposed to driving it. More processor use = More heat.

A parting observation...
When I loaded 1.8 X64, the Live DVD ran faster than the version of 1.6 i386 that was on my hard drive.
Never had that happen before!
I was sufficiently impressed that it totally changed my opinion of x64, I will never go back.

Thank you. That helped a lot. You know I installed Ultimate 64-Bit to find out the difference for my self and boy I was surprised to see the difference in performance. It is like a new operating system compare to the other Linux 64-Bit version. 8-)

You are absolutely correct about the amount of load it can handle which is more then the 32-Bit version.
About the software I already see over thousands of softwares in the Synaptic Package Manager  so I am not complaining.
I expected my dual core laptop to run slower in 64-Bit OS but it was the opposite. I guess they did a good job optimizing it for 64-Bit CPU. :geek:
Over all I am satisfied with my 64-Bit OS Ultimate 1.8 <BREW>

Next stop 64-Bit programming and going over the math limit....

I think more people should share their stories about 64-Bit version of Ubuntu so we can have larger spread of 64-Bit OS. In the future all the CPU will be 64-Bit minimum so its better to get ready for it.

jh13, can you post your computer specs?
Basically in order to run a 64 bit based OS you need to be sure that your computer architecture supports it, most of the late computer cpus out there have support, but there are still some that don't.
A 64 bit capable CPU will be able to run a 32 bit OS, but it won't run at all it's power, so if you have a 64bit capable PC, you better chose the 64 bit version.
Again, if you post your pc specs we'll be able to tell you better and for sure.

Redeemed, yes, your specs allow you to run the 64bit version, I'm running it on my Lenovo Thinkpad X61 which has a Centrino Core 2 Duo 1.6Ghz Processor and it runs great! I couldn't believe the difference between the 32bit and the 64bit, is like a twice faster and stronger computer!

You should try.

I don't know if you did it on purpose or not, but you've made me smile with your "specs"
Lid Switch, Power Button (CM), Date/Time, etc, it was funny, but this won't help a lot to figure out if your CPU is capable of doing 64bit, heheh. And what is this "Core(TheeMahn) Duo" processor? I thought he only makes Ultimate Edition distro, I didn't know he's into CPU manufacturing too... :D :D
Why don't you better open a terminal and put this command:
Code: Select all
cat /proc/cpuinfo

and paste the results here.
I'm almost sure your computer can handle 64bit, but to be 100% sure I prefer having a look at this more detailed info.
