Update Manager/Repo problem

Postby csc2ya » Tue Jan 20, 2009 6:06 pm

Recently (it started today), I've been getting errors from update manager saying it failed to download all the updates. I've tried running a sudo apt-get update, and when I do, I get the following:

Code: Select all
Err http://repoubuntusoftware.info harty/all Packages
  302 Found
Fetched 378B in 0s (389B/s)
W: Failed to fetch http://repoubuntusoftware.info/dists/harty/all/binary-i386/Packages.gz  302 Found

E: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

Has the repo url changed for 1.8, or is it just a temporary problem?

Apparently it's up and down all the time till it's finished, may be testing is being performed or something.

Well if its a good thing... like totally updating without the cost of a few DVDs (some burn programs fail ocasionally i.e. cpu and memory being used all the way..)

Any news on this yet? Last i heard, it was said that the repo should be back up by the time 2.1 is released.

It's now been released and still:

Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

This wouldn't be a problem if I could disable automatic updates, but whenever I do that, update manager keeps complaining about the update information being out of date, which is just as annoying.

It was said in an earlier post that 'it's not like windows'. If the windows update servers were down for this long, there would be computers getting compromised right left and centre.

I guess Windows has you brainwashed into thinking that updating is the answer to everything. When I install XP I don't do any updates. I put up a real firewall, anti virus, turn off automatic updates, security center, firewall, system restore and page filing.
If you want to get rid of the update icon create your own taskbar. I did.
Go to a terminal and type sudo ufw enable and your computer will never be compromised. It will close all the ports to your computer. You can't do that with Windows. There are no viruses in Linux, that's why most of the servers in the world are not Windows!!!!!
