anybody please help me out with my synaptic package manager..actually i m a newbie in linux & i have recently installed Ultimate 2.0 edition..
while i was installing some new packages through synaptic package manager, my pc turned off without being shutdown due to emergency power-cut..After that when I turned on my pc and tried to run synaptic p/m to install the incomplete packages, an error message poped up which says

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

then I tried to run dpkg --configure -a in Terminal..But i got this msg

dpkg: parse error, in file `/var/lib/dpkg/updates/0000' near line 3:
newline in field name `#padding'

now I am totally in fix about what to do now as I m not understanding anything...anymore..
PLEASE help me out.............. :(

Well, open up /var/lib/dpkg/updates and have a look near line 3 and see if anything looks strange to you.

3. padding
4. #padding
5. #padding
6. #padding
7. #padding

Make it look like this and see what happens. Change, save and exit. You will need root access to do this.
3.#padding
So open up a terminal and type sudo gedit /var/lib/dpkg/updates/0000 and comment out line 3(that means put one of these # in front of it).

Open up a terminal and type sudo dpkg --configure -a
then sudo apt-get update
Then read this: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SynapticHowto
If all else fails reinstall Synaptic from here: http://packages.ubuntu.com/intrepid/synaptic and reboot!!
