I just posted the contents below in the ubuntu forum. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=4747001#post4747001. My new 64 bit 1.7 installation has done the same kind of lockup twice in the same day on a different computer than the one I was using 32-bit Gutsy on back then. Have you had the same problem ? Know of the solution? Or, know what I can kill to at least appease my curiosity about it being laptop management services ? I have killed at least 4 installations with the tweak guide for ultimate. I don't want to have that happen again.
"HI,
I notice that Gutsy has a LOT of attention paid to making it work well on laptops, to manage the CPU, battery, etc... which is a good thing for laptop users.
Well, I am using a desktop. And for some unknown reason I get lockups where the display dims a little, tints or turns more of a gray-scale black and white image as if it is trying to hibernate or do some laptop thing. Sometimes, moving the mouse will "wake it up" and all is well, but more often than not, the mouse moves a few steps then locks up , the screen remains kind of dim and grey and I have to use the power supply to shut the thing down. All of my hardware has been tested and it all works beautifully with Win XP.
There are dozens of pages of posts about this issue.

Some people think it is specifically Firefox, I don't think so. There are lots of speculations about various drivers, Flash, video cards, compiz, etc... etc... but I have always thought that it is some of the laptop services and software trying to treat a desktop as if it were a laptop. The lockup seems to me to be like my Win XP laptop trying to "resume" when it is either hibernating or trying to go to hibernation.
All of the above is background for my question, which is:
What can I ABSOLUTELY, CERTAINLY disable or even uninstall with synaptic that is geared toward laptop use and not needed for a desktop connected to cable internet ? I want to remove or disable every single service or application that I don't need for a desktop that could even possibly be the cause of these lockups, as long as it can safely be removed.
Can you help or get me started in the right direction ? You could be helping many, many people if this is the cause. Today, with a new computer - I got two of the same lockups and it did not seem like FF was the cause. Crap. I am becoming more persuaded that it has to do with trying to hibernate a desktop or something like that.
