Upgrading to 8.4?

Help & support for Ultimate Edition 1.7

Upgrading to 8.4?

Postby Benbow » Thu Apr 03, 2008 5:50 am

I am using Ultimate Edition 1.7 and like every upgrade since 1.3 I am delighted with it!
My question is can I upgrade it to Ubuntu 8.4 or do I wait for the official Ultimate Edition update?
Thanks.

I believe the Upgrade only works within a Distro, (ie... Feisty to feisty, Gutsy to Gutsy)
So unless TheeMahn drastically changes the Upgrade script, it looks like a full install.

If I'm wrong here I'm sure someone will correct me. :D

so far it seems like a stable, out of the box, without all the extras!! not trying to pressure anyone.but you know when things go missing. it runs good on a work machine that nothing else works on(its a old server with intel onbord graphics) and looking & waiting paiently for theemans excelent touch ups!!

Yes, you will be able to upgrade from Ultimate Edition 1.7 to Ubuntu 8.4. HOWEVER, I would not recommend it. It will take about 4 hours to do so. You would be better off doing a fresh install of Ubuntu or waiting for Ultimate Edition 1.8. A few of us had some bad experiences here when trying to upgrade from Ultimate Edition 1.5 to Ubuntu 7.10. A 4 hour or longer of an upgrade process really sucks.

thanks for that advice
I use an laptop for testing & its running 1.7(fully partioned). how would you recomend me to partion a 40 gig drive so to run two versions of Ultimate Edition or ubuntu?? or what not! i'm semi famlier with gparted, so i guess that i would leave the 1.7 7 swap intact and format the rest?? a little feed back is always helpful.
and thank to all!! great foum here!! :D

With only 40GB space I would just split it in half (using Gparted and format) and when install comes up to the partitioner, just select "guided"- use largest free continuous space. <--for both installs
You WILL be pretty low on disk space on both of those versions though. Be very careful not to overstuff your drive! You won't be able to get back in without some serious head-ache! You've been warned.

My understainding is hardy goes final the 20th of this month "stable", I will be forthcoming in letting you know this will be no easy task to build on, hardy uses lzma compression in the kernel headers a new innovation which increases the load to build, but decreases the load for those running as it has a smaller memory footprint. Reconstructor does not support lzma, a stumbling block I have already overcome. I am fully capable of building it right now, but will not do so until stability sets in. Upgrading I do not suggest... I would suggest hanging tight for probably a week or so after that point and we should have a release.

What does this mean to me? Get my butt in gear, I have a 64 bit edition of Ultimate Edition 1.7 to get hot, repo is uploading now. Never ends around here.
