I have an hp dv6500. I had a lot of headaches installing ubuntu 7.10.

1) Installing from the live dvd at the install screen select the save video mode and hit F6 to edit and add the noapic and nolapic.
2) Boot with that option.
3) Run the install process
4) Reboot and at the grub edit the boot option and add the noapic and nolapic. Boot
5) During the boot you will be in video safe mode.
6) Edit the grub menu and add the noapic and nolapic. Now you will boot w/o editing everytime.
7) Run the Envy utility

You WILL have issues with the wireless, so you should be hardwired for installing. I would recommend very strongly getting a USB wireless for 20.00 and black listing the broadcom chipset, otherwise you will be making a nice dent in you desk/table from banging your head.
