I found a round about way. The direct solution was to install smplayer(which is a mplayer frontend) and type in the syntax to adjust the delay on the audio(a real pain). However, I just converted all the flv files I had to wmv with the Windows version of Winff(using Wine) and the a/v was in sync. It is not the solution I had hoped for, but it did work.
p.s. mov files played fine for some strang reason.
Hope this is helpful to someone.
