Eh, I'm not a fan of AWN. I hate having the task-list mix its icons in with my launchers. Gotta try kiba-dock. I just grabbed the latest SVN version of it for this. It's really for Gnome, but it'll run fine on KDE too, as this snapshot should illustrate.

The menu's Tastymenu too. Very nice. Still workin' on it, but makin' good progress gettin' the new desktop put together. :)

Yeah, I know, that's why I had to post a screenshot. Been dyin' to show off... ;)

Sure, be glad to. I'm likin' the way it's comin' together. I'm still tryin' to find a better wallpaper first tho. I'm not a big fan of the KDE-logo, I'd rather have something with a little more flair, but still usable and neat.

Really I like the XFCE desktop better, cuz you can achieve the same look while using half the background junk you have to run for KDE. It's much faster and more efficient. But I'm still kind of a rookie with XFCE, and the fact that you can run it with all that Gnome and KDE stuff turned off makes it tricky, cuz I gotta find pure-X versions of my favorite KDE and Gnome apps. Eventually. But first I wanna get a complete and usable KDE setup as a day-to-day desktop, then start playin' with XFCE some more.

Once I'm done with the KDE stuff, I'm gonna try to make it an Apt-on-CD iso and if you'd like, I wouldn't have a problem with you guys distributing it as a "Ubu*tu Ultimate Community KDE 1.7 BETA 1" if you want. I'd have to upload it and let you guys go over it first, since I like to put all the codecs and stuff in already, so it won't be a legally "pure" version like the two you've got out now would be. Personally, I wouldn't have a problem puttin' it out like that, but I don't really understand the nuts 'n' bolts of all that GPL stuff and I know a lot of linux groups get their panties in a bunch over it. Probably even moreso since UU undoubtably has to comply with certain standards setup by Ubuntu in order to use their name.

I dunno, it's all moot if I screw it up. I have been known to break a promising desktop on occasion.

PS: Weird. For some reason, the original post had the full "U" word in that UU Community KDE line and it got auto-edited out, but it DOESN'T when I use the full word at the end of the paragraph???

PPS: Posted in the screenie section. :)

Are you refering to the old name of Ultimate Edition? This is now just Ultimate Edition. We have no standards setup by Ubuntu in order to use their name. The only condition ... Change our logo and name. This is after all GPL distro as well as Ubuntu. Use it, change it, improve it, BREAK IT ;) No charge

It is? I didn't know that. I mean this page is "www.forumubuntusoftware.ingo". I mean the "U" word is all over this site. But if Ubuntu's got no more say, then I guess the codec thing wouldn't be much of an issue. Well, right now, I'm in the process of streamlining the software installs, removing redundant stuff I'm not gonna use, re-organizing the directory structure, stuff like that. After that, I'll get some themes setup for bootup, login, etc and then go through and delete any source-code still kickin' around, wallpapers that I downloaded to "test" that suck and stuff like that. Then comes the process of cleaning my personal info out of this thing, wallet stuff, cookies, history, etc. After all THAT, then I'll be ready to take a crack at the Apt-on-CD thing. I haven't even looked at it, so I don't know how complicated a process it is, but I'm gonna give it a shot. If you guys would like to take a look at the finished product, PM me an FTP server to upload it to or whatever. It won't be that big, probably smaller than the original UU 1.7, cuz I'm uninstalling a lot of stuff as I reorganize things.
