Beryl and Ubuntu Ultimate Edition 1.7

Help & support for Ultimate Edition 1.7

Beryl and Ubuntu Ultimate Edition 1.7

Postby sogmko » Thu Jan 31, 2008 10:03 am

Hi all,

First i would to felicite the compiler of this distros ;).

I have installed it last night and all is good, but i would like to install Beryl.
Whe i try to get the source with svn co ...(subversion), the host refuse my connection.(Connection refused)

Is there a solution to that ?

Another question :D ,

How does it work ?

I just know that there is a X server and a window manager in up of X.
What is the difference with Beryl Compiz and XGL ?

Thanks ;)

Ultimate Edition 1.7 does not include Beryl it has been superseded by Compiz-Fusion (a combing of Beryl & Compiz). XGL is no longer required with XORG 7.1+ which is included in Ultimate Edition 1.7. I am unsure if beryl is still being maintained, if not it would be one of the reasons that SVN no longer works.

Compiz is nice, it's hard for me to live without the Expo plugin. The problem I find is that running it on KDE, it will eventually hose up X. After a few hours if you try to restart the desktop manager or CTRL-ALT-Backspace to restart X, it'll just lock everything up tight. Beryl is very nice too, I actually prefer the config-page setup of that to Compiz's, but as far as I know, there's no Expo plugin for Beryl, and that's a deal-breaker for me. And like Theeman said, Beryl is an abandoned project as it's been rolled into Compiz-fusion.

Good luck either way. And if you go with CF, please post back again about whether or not you see the same X lockup issue I had.

i noticed beryl isnt in any of the repos anymore either. however you can still get the tarballs and attempt to compile the whole thing from source if you really want beryl.
