Installation locks-up

Help & support for Ultimate Edition 1.7

Re: Installation locks-up

Glad to hear you made the install.
While you're not out of the woods yet, most of the frustration is behind you.
A lot of us have to "play" with our video drivers to get them to work properly,
( as you probably noticed from your last Gutsy install )
but it gets easier every time. A learning curve thing.
Unlike windows there is a sequence to follow.
1) install OS
2) install flash & adobe plug-ins
3) Update ( hit the update icon on desktop an go away for several hours )
*note* if update appears stuck... move windows around to see if update is waiting on a responce from you.
4) Reboot
5) Install video drivers
Video drivers come dead-last for a reason...
an update will bork your video drivers and you will have to do them over again anyway.

A nice Ati how-to here
viewtopic.php?f=7&t=323

Since I run nvidia an know less than nothing about Ati, I'm worthless for help.
Since you had gutsy you probably know this.
BUT... to get your desktop back,
Esc at Grub
select recovery mode
Code: Select all
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

follow instructions
yes automaticaly reconfigure xorg.conf
select highest resolution you want for default
when complete reboot and you should have your desktop back

"drama1981" is our resident Ati god and will most likely be a great help as soon as he reads your last post.

how is it going along? when you installed the drivers did you do it the old fashioned way (using my howto) or did you use the script that pops up upon boot? if you used the script i can still attempt to help but i may not be a ton of help since i NEVER use it. i always do it the old fashioned way. however if you did use my howto im positive i can help tehre. if you didnt though dont try it just yet as it is a few months out of date because the last release from ati was pure garbage and i havent gotten the chance to test the new release yet. i know the process has changed slightly though. ill try and get that updated tonight or sometime tomorrow (after i test the driver of course). in the mean time after you boot do the following

alt+ctrl+f2

this will give you a black screen with white lettering. type your username hit enter. type your pass hit enter again.

now do the following

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg this is the reconfigureation screen. your mouse wont work here so to move between teh various boxs you use tab.

let it auto detect. for driver choose ati. jus select the defaults for everything else until you get to monitor. let it autodetect.

now it asks for resolutions. make sure you only place and x next to the resolutions you know for sure your monitor supports. if tehre is a resoultion your unsure of its best to leave it unselected. use the spacebar to add or remove the x. when you are done here hit tab until ok or yes is highlighted. next screen is for sync rates. choose advanced so it will autodetect the correct values.

now accept the defaults for everything else.

now you should be back in teh shell again. do the following

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start

see if this helps

Sorry for being such a *nix n00b microsoft has had the market share for way to long, i am kinda learning as i go.

After i finally got it to install using the generic.all line code and the all the updates including the ati driver script that follows adobe and then the reboot. I can no longer get to any sort of UI. MY system freezes in the middle of what i think it the usplash dragon.
I tried the recovery mode by using esc @ grub but that froze as well.

I then thought i would try and just reinstall and not let the driver script run and do it the old fashion way using the repo's and term however.....
I could not reinstall the same way i did before. I have only tried 2 dvds
-memorex dvd+r burned @ max did not work
-sony dvd-r burned @ 2 something worked one time.

I forgot to mention something about my hardware, I do have an ATI tv wonder card installed should i take it out and try to reinstall on a new dvd?

ok lets start with some trouble shooting first. when you hit esc to show the grub menu. then hit e. you will now be presented with 4 lines. highlight the second line. rmove quite splash from it. hit enter then b to boot. now you wont have a usplash at this point. instead it will be a black screen with a bunch of while lettering. we are looking for anything that says failed or error. if you see anything like that write down as much as you can about it. now it will scroll very fast so you may have to do it a few times. you have to edit the boot line as stated above each time. do this during a normal boot you dont need the dvd. this is where i always start when i have boot problems.

OK OK..
I am able to login to gnome its just the graphics drivers are not working yet.
in following the steps givin by drama http://www.forumubuntusoftware.info/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=323
step 6 is posing a problem:
Code: Select all
main@main-desktop:~/Desktop$ sudo ln -sf /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/misc/fglrx.ko /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/volatile/fglrx.ko
ln: creating symbolic link `/lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/volatile/fglrx.ko' to `/lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/misc/fglrx.ko': No such file or directory
main@main-desktop:~/Desktop$

Any ideas for a n00b
Thank you for all the help.

**step 7 not 6 as i previously wrote.

that howto is a little outdated. im going to update it this evening when i get home and have a chance to install the new driver myself (alot has changed). however if you still wanna go with the old version of the driver i would first make sure that these 2 directories even exist. usually they do but ive noticed sometimes 4 some odd reason they arent there

/lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/volatile/

/lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/misc/

just click places in the main menu. then computer. click filesystem. now browse for them 2 directories. you may have to click view then show hidden for them to show up. i cant remember exactly. just get back to me. cheers :-)

p.s. that is actually step 7 not step 6 as you have stated. did you just state it wrong or did you mistakenly skip step 6 (compile kernel module) ?

Ok i think i flubbed up this time.
Me being impatient, used the "envy -t" command in terminal and i think it actually worked because before that booting up would give me driver errors and have me select a driver then reboot to and the best resolution i would get is 800x600.
Now... the silly thing boots right to the gnome login screen, i enter my login/pass and then all i get is a beige color screen.

** I tried recovery mode and entered "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" and it said something to the extent that xserve was not installed.

Ok i think i am on to something here!!
I can not login into gnome without getting the beige only screen however i changeed the session to KDE and i am able to get the the desktop!! i do like gnome better and want to get that part fixed.
Also the resolution seems to be much better as i was able to change it to 1280x1024.

well the only way i can think of would be to remove quiet and splash from the bootline and then look for failed/error messages.
