Help & support for Ultimate Edition 1.7

Re: Once you have Ultimate Edition 1.7 feel free to post...

Postby pokkets » Mon Mar 03, 2008 4:26 am

I've had some bugs with update-manager, and went to 'Launchpad" which was where I thought Ubuntu bugs were reported I'm having trouble working the rules out, because the programs have been suggesting bug reports be sent, and I went to launchpad with details, and spent a bit of time explaining how my system hardware sucked because it was locked on windows (ndiswrappers?) I'm trading up to a dual core that doesn't know windows, and wanted to see how much I could load on my 1.7 before I installed it permanently on the next laptop I finally thought I'd rush in and upgrade to hardya5, with an update-manager -d and there were a few things about my system that hardy didn't like and after 9 hours it told me to dpkg -a or something, to return my system to it's original state. I thought not a chance. I had been experimenting so I also had a few other distros in other sessions. The bottom line is they said it wasn't their problem, because they didn't handle ultimate bugs. I've copy pasted the text, because If I know it's not my place to provide a link when Thee Mahn has put so much work into the project. The 1.7 out of the box worked fine until I started to play with it, so I don't know how bugs are dealt with. I'm fairly new to Linux but learning the 'hard way' has taught me a lot quickly.
but I'm sure if Thee Mahn wants to link with launchpad I'll let him choose without getting involved.
this is the url of the launchpad link In case you're interested the bug at launchpad is 197199

https://edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu.ultimate/+filebug
Report a bug
Ultimate does not use Launchpad as its bug tracker.
Are you sure this bug is in upstream Ultimate?
* If the bug you are reporting is in a package installed by a distribution registered in Launchpad, you should file the bug against that specific distribution.
Launchpad doesn't know of any distribution packages that include upstream Ultimate. You can help by linking them for us.
Launchpad doesn't know what bug tracker Ultimate uses. Do you know? Tell us about it.

As I said before, the way 1.7 came out of the box was great I just wanted to see what I could get away with before I traded up.

Most likely your update manager problems were caused by the Ultimate Edition repo being down,
will be back up today or tomorrow
1st Box: Ultimate Edition 2.0 x64/ 1.8 x64
2nd Box: XP (dusty)
3rd Box: Stable Media box Ultimate Edition 1.8 x64 with XBMC

I called our "now old hosting provider" and they informed me the reason it was suspended is too much traffic, as a temporary fix to a permanent problem I have paid for the original hosting (only 3 Terabytes of bandwidth, we used 3 TB in a week with previous hosting), Leadfingers is on it and we are eyeballing 3 dedicated servers this is very expensive about $220 a month for each 5 TB of tier 1 bandwidth each server unlimited connections and each will be running Ultimate Edition to boot, you fellas will probably be seeing more ads in the near future to help absorb the costs, we will continue to deal with problems such as this until financial problems are behind us. We are getting close to hitting top 10 distros on the net as reported via distrowatch. We accomplished this feat in a little over a week. It is no wonder hosting accounts are eager to get rid of us. You think they would welcome business like that, I could drop them a plugin and see tons of extra money, evidently they worry about the servers going down due to traffic, can I help this?

The repos DNS is propagating to the new hosting provider, I have in total ~8GB of packages to upload so you will be seeing 404 errors until this process finishes. I will let you know I have a surprise in store for you, I took the time to update virtually all packages on the repo, so all will see an "Upgrade" within a day or 2. As soon as I upload a tiny file called Packages.gz all computers using the repo will feel this bonus as it stands:
Code: Select all

Many new apps / games have been added and the others upgraded some as much as 200 builds newer. You will thank me for it when it goes hot. I have a howto for those that would like to learn how a repo works, I also provide source for how I did it in the programming section.

Not currently added is how to make a local repo which I have, I have installed almost every package that will soon be on the repo... talk about software availability, I did so to test to make sure all will work. Perhaps later I may come back and modify the how to to reflect this. Links to follow sorry have to work this eve.

Sorry for the inconvieniance,

TheeMahn

Thanks for taking the time to post, and offering your gratitude. I apologize for the servers status and 404 errors as it is being repopulated 17 hours to go for just the repo. The download server only has 1.7 and 1.4 cd on it so far, we have seen some tremendous traffic, I am glad you like it.

Best regards,

Hi

I had dowloaded the 1.7 DVD a while back and just installed it a couple of days ago. It is great to have a distro that is so convenient out of the box. The tweaking is fairly limited. I would go back and forth between windows and linux off and on since 2000. Your distro, if it keeps going the way it is, may be the newbie's distro of choice.

Considering that I haven't worked in a *nix shell since '83 I appreciate the ease of use and the help on the forum.
I don't have the finances to contribute, but if there is some way I can contribute (being a former hardware guy not a software guy so much) then let me know. I did spend some time writing test procedures and tech writing.

Thanks to Theeman and all the others who help on the project including forums and website.

Welcome aboard mgc1952! Thanks for the compliments on the OS and forum :) I think that everyone here would agree, that the most important type of help around here is contributing to the community what you have learned and helping others with their problems. This is what stands out the most about any *nix community in my opinion. That and GPL is the coolest thing available with a computer today!

Ok I just downloaded and installed Ultimate Edition 7 and I have this problem with installing/upgrading
applications. Whenever I try to install or upgrade I get this error:

What does this means? Also I got compiz running, or at least I think it is, because I got some effects. I got
it working via the System->Preferences->Appearance->Visual Effects, however I cant seem to find a way

click it doesnt seem to have any effect, and when I ran the fusion-icon via the terminal I get this:

Firstly, there is a problem with kubuntu-docs, I would open up Synaptic Package manager and search for "kubuntu-docs" and click to fully remove it, then turn around and install it again. I heard this works.
As for your compiz fusion issues, I think that you might need to install ccsm
sudo apt-get install ccsm
If you like the synaptic package manager better you can install it there as well. For some reason I had to install ccsm (compiz configuration settings manager [i think]) for any ability to adjust compiz settings.
Hope this helps. ;)
