upgrade to 8.08 lts

at home im running 1.7 and have noticed that when i update i have the upgrade message too, saying that when i want to upgrade i'll be upgrading to 8.04. that's ok. when i do so will i keep all the software etc on the box or would i need to reinstall via synaptic? im sure it will but i have never upgraded a linux box!ta

Sorry wit..one of us is misunderstanding something here...the only way to upgrade from 1.7 or lower to 1.8 or 8.04 as far as that particular OS is to download the 1.8/8.04 version of your choice (i.e. 32 or 64 bit), burn it to DVD, then install...if I'm wrong I apologize, but that's the way I understand it. Whereas you can upgrade Windows XP to Vista, that can't be done (as easily, much harder and intense) with Ultimate Edition. As it warns you in the Newbie forum...Ultimate Edition 1.8 does not currently have a newer Upgrade script than the default, For 1.8 users DO NOT use either of the scripts below. You have been warned

I wouldn't try it personnally...but IF I wanted to "experiment doing it that way, then I would reinstall all my apps thru Synaptic, with the option of "Leave all downloaded packages in the cache" selected

Save Apt packages to cache

...install APTonCD, make a backup of all my apt packages (that was saved to cache in Synaptic), install ReMasterSys and make a DVD .iso backup of my system...after all that is done...then, and only then, would I attempt to upgrade to a higher Ultimate Edition version thru the Upgrade Icon on the Desktop...Otherwise, since I already have all the pre-upgrade (AptonCD/ReMasterSys) stuff done, I would just download Ultimate Edition 1.8 from the servers/torrent, burn it to CD, then install my Apt packages from the AptonCD CD. Another thing that comes to mind, when upgrading to a higher OS version, would it update all the kernal header files???? If not, then you would end up having to reinstall them from Synaptic anyway. Any of this make sense!?!?! Think my mind stayed to far ahead of my fingers

Upgrading or updating from Gutsy to Hardy (from 1.7 to 1.8) is risky for even the most experienced Linux user.
While it can be done it will take more time and headache medicine than doing a fresh install of 1.8 and adding your extra apps and data.

If you still think this is the route for you, Backup your data before you start
Use simple backup config (System/Administration/Simple Backup config) save it to a CD, DVD or different drive, so you can retrieve it later.

Another option is Partimage where you image the whole partition to 1 or more DVD's, so you could restore your whole partition if you bork your upgrade attempt.

I strongly advise using both if you must upgrade instead of install.
