Help! Cant play videos

Postby nosferatu » Fri Jul 04, 2008 12:45 pm

Hi every one

i got this problem and don't know what to do, i downloaded
some videos from youtube and i was able to play the normally in movie player
then i shut down the laptop. Later when i restarted the laptop and tried to watch
one of the videos, i got no image only the sound. When i resize the window of the
movie player i got image for about 1sec then goes back to black. I already read the
forums about a similar issue but i got nothing.

I really don't know what to do, if somebody could help me i would really appreciate it. Thx

Ok .. Thanks :) Let's try to cut to the shortcuts...will they play in VLC or anything else?? were you using the mplayer with gstreamer or xine?? what were you doing before you shut it down last time?? did you change anything that might even remotely have something to do with video?? did any updates come up that you installed maybe?? anything at all?? have you installed the ubuntu-restricted-codecs or medibuntu??
It's been awhile since I've been in 1.7...I'am all 1.8 both x32 & x64 now...but figure video is video is video  Hmmmm...I did say we were cutting down to the shortcuts huh?? ;)

I tried vlc and all have the same problem, was using mplayer but I dont know if it was with gsteamer or xine, before I shut it down I was browsing on the net, I didnt chng anything that might chng the video configuration, didnt download any update, already installed the ubuntu-restricted-codecs.
I was able to see the downloaded video with no problems but after I restarted the laptop I couldn't anymore, only the sound is working properly and if I leave the video running the image flashes for a second and then goes away the comes back for another second and goes away again.

txh for helping btw.

OK..Thanks...Does everything else (boot up...Desktop display...anything to do with video) work OK?? Does this just effect YouTube vid or any vid at all over the net?? Did you install the ATI drivers via restricted or EnvyNG?? open a Terminal...type sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf...copy & paste here...and that's capitol X for X11 :) Guess we'll have to forget about shortcutting... :o

Edit: How 'bout the streaming when the vid is downloading...does it look like it's loading (caching) ok?? You prolly know that usually the streaming comes fast enuff to cache while the player slightly lags (what it seems like anyway)...gives you smooth playing video that way...

everything else works ok, even the settings of compiz and I can see videos directly from youtube but the problem is when I downloaded it I was able to see it only once and after that all this happened
and with the command this is what I got:

# xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.

#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Good job :) but didn't copy down far enuff ;) need the vid card section 8-) ... and let me make sure I'm understanding...you can still see the vid live from YouTube...but you can't play the d/l'd (saved to your hard drive) video from YouTube?? that right?? and if so...what format (i.e. .avi, .mp4, .avs, etc...) is it saved in?? and...oh yeah...your ATI drivers...installed thru Hardware Restricted Drivers or with EnvyNG??

ops im sorry, I will paste all again, and yeah im still able to see vids live from youtube or any other similar page but when I downloaded them and try to open I can only hear the video but not watch it.
only the 1st time I was able to, the page that I use to download videos says to save the file with the flv extension but I didnt do that because I was able to see it that way without the extension. I tried to put the flv extension in one of the videos but didnt make any difference. and i install the drivers with envyng
here is the result of the command again:

# xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)

OK...xorg good to go (gotta luv that EnvyNG!!! :) ) OK...2 scenarios here:
1. Did you play them the first time (when they played ok) by selecting the vid file from within Movie Player??

2. Since then (the files that won't play), do they by chance have spaces in the file names (i.e. Make My Day.flv etc...) and did you try to play them from the directory they reside in by double clicking on it (or by right click "open with") ??

**Files with spaces in the filename:
--WILL play from choosing the file from within mplayer...

--WILL NOT play from choosing the file from directory file is located (i.e. by opening 'File Browser' & double click or right click "open with")
