There is a script but it wont get him into a full fledge Ultimate Edition...best way to do it is to uninstall Gutsy and install 1.7..
I have tried it and no matter how many time I have done it, using script...always had to uninstall...and use the installation DVD of 1.7.. ;)

The Script and a guide is in Newbie's Corner under 4 Upgrade ~vs~ update, and the upgrade script
Don't forget to reinstall your video drivers before you reboot from the Upgrade!

For Themes & Icons see the Official Ultimate Edition Themes. You can chose which set you want.

I have 1.4 and would like to upgrade my existing installation with my servers and databases to 1.7. There seems to be a lot of confusing information on the forum. There is a message in the news section that says to wait for the upgrade script. In other areas it says that there is an upgrade script, but it needs an update and still other posts say the upgrade script has problems .I have tried the upgrade icon that I run periodically but I still seem to be in 1.4,. Is it a problem is that more posts are made without removing outdated posts or at least following up on them? Am I just not figuring it out? Am I an idiot? I guess I will stay with 1.4 if the script does not upgrade the OS. I really don't know if the upgrade script is doing anything positive for me. There is a lot of downloading and installation stuff, but I cant tell if the stuff was already there. Is the UU version number displayed somewhere? Is there a log of what, if anything, got updated? I'm not a big fan of UU, but I do use it a lot.

The upgrade doesnt upgrade from distro to distro.. like gutsy to hardy.. i would download the ISO and reinstall, Some have added the kernals to older releases myself included but it doesnt work nearly as well and usually will cause some hair loss.

Actually, I think that back in the 1.4 days the script was able to upgrade to 1.5 & 1.6 (Feisty to Gusty) I have never done it personally. But that was the whole idea in the first place. I have no idea if TheeMahn has changed this internally in his repo or not. You might get a surprise when the script connects you to his server. Just a warning. So, the safe bet would be to do as Cab has instructed.
