Gnome 3.x and KDE 4.1x just cannot be ignored anymore.
Ubuntu 14.04 is racing ahead.
Ubuntu has kubuntu, xubuntu, lubuntu and now ubuntu gnome.
Future Ultimate Edition and Oz Unity will have power packed desktop environments like gnome-shell, kde and xfce.
No matter what, gnome isn't going anywhere. Being a formidable linux and *BSD desktop entity, both gnome and KDE are the pillars atop which linux stands and no matter the hate or preferences toward the destop situation the right of way is dictated by them, the compositor's and the graphical device driver support AMD and Nvidia bring to its users. I like Unity but will not use it.
So show off your gnome and kde desktops...

Xan when we look at everything, there is always hassles somewhere! I basically got to the point that I appreciate all that is here. As I said before, not to down Windows, but the simple fact is it never works right for me! Same goes for GM products, have absolutely no luck whatsoever! So, I basically do not buy any GMs anymore and do my best to avoid Windows!I know at many points when it comes to Linux, I do push it a bit on people, but for the most part is to show there is a choice. With cars, I never do as everyone is more aware of the vehicles in production, than Operating Systems! Am not defending Ubuntu at all, but least when it comes down to it is usable and is about the most simplistic system for new users. We have to remember way back(for me close to 2 years) when we started using Linux. We were naive Windows users that were used to the way that system worked. It was not an easy conversion for many of us. Least with Ubuntu, the changeover was a bit easier since there are so many forums and help sections in the system itself! Sure Ubuntu's systems are becoming more intense now with some crazy new ideas, but I suppose when it comes to trying to win more customers, newer ideas are implemented to reach their goals. Of course, many times new ideas and visions are not going to get the "Red Carpet" treatment as have found out on some of my own ideas! Still, there are many that want to see new ideas/visions and enjoy them! Also, in the past year have thought some of the ideas were not good, but after building a few of these Ubuntu's I came to find out there was no other way to do it! This 13.04, I currently run to me seems like is 5 years after the 12.10 I put together, just amazing! Sure there are some points that hurt and the fact I do not have more years at doing this, but the end result is awesome to see things function! A few days ago was working with video. Now in all my time on Windows, I never saw things go so smooth!

The exact second of the film I wanted to start the video clip was so simply done without crashing or strange messages! The footage was then put on a small mp4 player and played with more precision than I have ever seen in my life with computing! I will guarantee that Windows would never produce something so precise. What is really amazing is the software that came with this unit is not even half as precise as the software of Ubuntu! Developers in Ubuntu have not sold us out! They are simply in an ever evolving state to produce the best possible product they can produce. We also have to take into consideration that Ubuntu wants us to be able to do anything we want and does not want to have any constraints for us to contend with! Ubuntu never forgets the end user and the many wants and needs!!!! To me with everything concerned is a very exciting time to be in computing!

Anyway as not to get anymore carried away and follow this post here is my desktop at present with one of my newer themes called "Cyana". Credit for the great background picture belongs to "demercel" on Gnome Look. Absolutely, brilliant and beautiful background picture of the "London Bridge" just another point and proof that we can have an absolutely gorgeous desktop with Gnome and Linux!

I am starting to enjoy all the Social integration of Gnome 3. Empathy and "online accounts" is getting to me.

Kopete and Kmail also work nicely with Facebook and G+.

Either way, I am loving KDE 4.1X and Gnome 3.

This Ubuntu dependancy I feel goes against the reason we use Linux in the first place. Ubuntu sold us out and it is time for them to go.

And that's 'some' work required by Canonical. Unless they have some sort of strategy where they can really make more money like redhat or steam, ubuntu is pretty much done and fatigued.
Pushing Mir down the throats of everyone(except us users) when wayland is nearly ready is like driving without brakes.

(Ubuntu is after all, Debian, unstable and testing.)

Trying to make Classic Play along, lol.

My beef with Classic is it feels like I should be able to run it on something way less powerful and for what it is it actually runs pretty high and even lags more than KDE in some cases. I also feel that although there is some functionality in its setup there is a lot of Real Estate that is not only unused, but I can't do anything whatsoever with it. In the end I'll still resort to Flashback, formerly known as Fallback, formerly known as Classic, to play with Compiz, or use Unity, over what Gnome is offering as cutting edge.

I mean, when I'm not using KDE of course.

The reason classic, fallback and flashback still exist is because everthing gnome still loves a one night stand with gtk2. After all they are all wannabes.

THe moment Redhat drops support for gnome-2... thats the death knell for the remnants for anything gnome-2 related...but by then the gtk3 stack will be mature enough(already is) and will mutually fuse with gtk2....to use older themes.

Even Orbital(QT based), a successor to the raw X window session has more compositing features and weight than gnome-classic.

Wayland will hook up with orbital to replace the X(protocol, window and the entire stack).

Cinnamon has created its own star for energy and is revoluting smoothly around it.

Mate will look like gnome-2 but will be run atop gtk3.

Not much at all for Gnome Classic! I mean what fun is it??? I like compiz and effects, Gnome Classic lacks that! To be totally honest the only time I ever use it is to see how a shell theme will work! If Gnome dumped Classic, it would probably take me a few months before I figured it! KDE is not like I hate it, but I can just find things faster on a Gnome desktop. I noticed even with LXDE or XFCE I can find things, but is much simpler on the Gnome Flashback desktop. Cinnamon also seems a bit more organized to me too, but still when it comes to getting something done fast, I will stick with Flashback! KDE utilities, try and stop me from using them, you will never succeed at that! I absolutely love their utilities as they function very well and are very simplistic in their usage. Gnome is a drag with many utilities as they tend to be complex and many points you will have to read quite a bit before you get a program to function. Now, if Gnome would take their calendar from Classic or plain Gnome desktop and integrate it into Flashback desktop would be sweet! I love that Calendar, but of course is the only thing, so is not enough to keep me using that desktop! Also the fact about changing the color scheme of lower taskbar being quite complex and not able to be implemented into a theme is very and I mean very disturbing and disgusting to me! I guess when I was in Kindergarten and all the other kids were painting, I was more concerned about reality! Now after all these years, I suppose has caught up with me and I find myself overwhelmed I can create certain types of looks on the computer! I know some consider it ugly, while others may like. I know is not for all, but least I love what I do! Currently working on a little more justice and looks to "Ambiance" I feel the idea behind it was intense, but unfortunately time was not there to get it this way! Somewhere in my mind, I figure if the original creator of this theme had more time this is how it would have appeared in picture below. Will mess with KDE soon, has been some time, but is very enjoyable also to get great looks there!

Gnome-classic is not a real desktop.
It is just a fallback mechanism until gnome 3(gnome-shell) takes over.
You will not here a single word from the gnome developers talking about the classic.
They have a todo list and honestly nobody cares from their side or is expected to.

Compiz is an external program and this too is now in a zombie state.....but is integrated in parts in unity, e17 and cinnamon. KDE has native functionality of compiz. All the effects are implemented through opengl.....

Mate is a real desktop environment and yet again like future xfce, will migrate to gtk3.
