To be totally honest the only time I ever use it is to see how a shell theme will work! If Gnome dumped Classic, it would probably take me a few months before I figured it! KDE is not like I hate it, but I can just find things faster on a Gnome desktop. I noticed even with LXDE or XFCE I can find things, but is much simpler on the Gnome Flashback desktop. Cinnamon also seems a bit more organized to me too, but still when it comes to getting something done fast, I will stick with Flashback! KDE utilities, try and stop me from using them, you will never succeed at that! I absolutely love their utilities as they function very well and are very simplistic in their usage. Gnome is a drag with many utilities as they tend to be complex and many points you will have to read quite a bit before you get a program to function. Now, if Gnome would take their calendar from Classic or plain Gnome desktop and integrate it into Flashback desktop would be sweet! I love that Calendar, but of course is the only thing, so is not enough to keep me using that desktop! Also the fact about changing the color scheme of lower taskbar being quite complex and not able to be implemented into a theme is very and I mean very disturbing and disgusting to me! I guess when I was in Kindergarten and all the other kids were painting, I was more concerned about reality! Now after all these years, I suppose has caught up with me and I find myself overwhelmed I can create certain types of looks on the computer! I know some consider it ugly, while others may like. I know is not for all, but least I love what I do! Currently working on a little more justice and looks to "Ambiance" I feel the idea behind it was intense, but unfortunately time was not there to get it this way! Somewhere in my mind, I figure if the original creator of this theme had more time this is how it would have appeared in picture below. Will mess with KDE soon, has been some time, but is very enjoyable also to get great looks there!

You have got to learn to break up your sentences a little. <BREW>

Different strokes for different folks. If you make something that everyone agrees with then you did it wrong because all life is about to end.

I will use, or add your themes, at least one or two, if I can find them.

Last I remembered, when you tried KDE you kept thinking it was Gnome!

Was not thinking it was Gnome, but was wishing I could get similar looks! See, every time I do my text coloring bit on the bottom taskbar, the text becomes very blurry and bugs my eyes! Not a good one!!! Then, I get left using it like the below unfinished as I call it! I know not everyone likes the text coloring bit, but this is what I want for my themes! That is also the reason I do not use Gnome Classic, I simply hate white and black text!

Yes, at times I just type fast and do not separate is not a good thing at all and am sorry for it! I also do not get the speed out of KDE that I do with Gnome. There is no error there how it is working, but for some unknown reason is a bit slow! I also find myself typing in a search for programs I want to find as to get to them quicker which actually takes a little more time than finding them in Gnome. I like the spread out menus much better as my eyes seem to move quicker than my hands at most times!

Am also geared towards change! I grew up with Tube TV's and going with my father to Walgreens to test them when they would burn out and something strange would happen to the TV such as horizontal hold would be messed up! These days is unheard of! So, I would not ever want to see one of those TV's in my house! I currently own a 50 inch flatscreen. I used Windows 95, XP, Vista, 7 and 8. I do not want to go backwards to those systems and try to make my Linux system look trashy! I feel is unjust to make a beautiful Operating system look that bad! I welcome change and it has been awesome to see all that is happening in Linux and would not trade it for anything on this earth!

Always my personal belief when it comes to the themes I create, is to embrace 2014! Am not a pro in the least and boy do I need work when it comes to KDE and am looking into it! Have seen some recent effort that has excited me greatly! I am going to investigate how this theme was created and eventually create my own using some of those innovations! Since, I have not been able to create the look I enjoy properly on that desktop, yes it does keep me staying away! I just can never seem to have a theme that looks as if it is 10 years old! Sorry is just not me! Have to remember, when it comes to Linux, the ability to have the look I want totally enticed me! Anyway before I get more carried away as I always seem to better put this picture up!

See! Gnome! In the Launcher!

Ha Ha

Personally I am having issues keeping up. Support for 13.04 ended today! Aaaagh!

It is tempting to go back to 12.04, hopefully my 13.10 can adapt to 14.04 upon release...fingers crossed...not looking so good right now but 13.10 is certainly secured.

I'm actually on 12.04 right now...

Re: Gnome 3.x and KDE 4.1x screenshots...

Postby BBOSAK2143 » Tue Jan 28, 2014 12:54 pm

Every upgrade I have ever tried has left me with about 75%, so personally I wind up building a new one. Of course I always have to wait til a mini is available so that also sucks! I am very upset at the fact about waiting so blessed long on these mini's!!! I never think that point is fair whatsoever. I do not want a full blown Ubuntu! Been there done it and is a total nightmare! I have a selection of software I want to run, and do not want it decided for me! Of course it comes from having been on Ultimate. Ultimate had the right software that always worked, so I mostly stick with those programs. The ones that have replaced some of the programs I formerly used are also tip top! Have made a few recommendations on here with those programs as I feel they are above reproach and worthy of being included in Ultimate, otherwise would say nothing!

I suppose I did cheat a little as using a little program that works a bit of gnome into KDE. I am not going to lie about it! As have said before, I am a Gnome Addict! I confess, I probably would have never looked at Linux if Gnome did not seduce me! I fell in love with the layout of Gnome back when it was Gnome 2x! The menu was spread out and I had no problem finding anything! When Gnome 3 came out, it really sent my head reeling! It was beyond beautiful! Sure it was having issues, but I had confidence it would get straightened out. It did, but yes there are still hassles. Still, we have to remember it is a very sophisticated desktop, probably somewhere around 20x that of a Windows desktop. I also feel KDE resembles the same sophistication. I do however, miss their original layout as was very close to that of Gnome and easy to find things!

I ran that KDE on Netrunner and was very easy to deal with. I did like that OS, but of course when it came to loads of programs it fell way short of Ultimate!!! Still do think is a good OS also, but is more for someone who does not do tons of things as most of us here seem to!!! Am also not very keen at all on the KDE splash screens, so sometime also have to work on a decent one. The "Joy" one just highly preturbs me! Looks like Windows hit by a Tornado or something, just for some reason sets poorly with me! Also the fact I do not know how to get KDE preset so it does not look so "ugly" when I first get the system loaded! Least I can get Gnome with one of the Window themes and my shell theme on first shot! As have said that 1990's text look am completely wore out on it! We have the technology to go way beyond those years, so why have our computers booting to something so ugly on the get go???

Now, personally my recommendation would be to least start out with something on the order of "BeiTanBro". The reason for such, would be to show this is not 1990, this is 2014 the current year we live in and Linux has arrived! We are not constrained to only use Black and White text! We now have options, since our brilliant developers have provided for us! Below is "BeiTanBro_II" a very underated theme of mine. I find this theme very useful for work on scripts and themes since the coloring really does help and is gentle on the eyes! Also provides a bit of shielding when one's computer is flooded by sunlight as happens at my house many times! Main point it emulates what our computers can do at present! I keep screaming this fact as am sure developers are also getting tired of the fact people will not accept what can be done now and want to return to 1990! I do not!!!!

WHOOOOOA!!
Lets not hijack and stay on track guys.
Off-Topic :
Linux is written by people who are employed by corporations who actually pay them to work on their hobby+job but yet still, the majority of it comes from hobbyists too. The languages used for linux are C, C++, perl, python, haskell, java(and derivatives), assembly, delphi, fortran etc, just to name a few. The database of programs and the OS is approaching a billion lines of code. This alone would require multiple lifetimes for a dozen people to work on. There is no definite standard. Linux is highly customizable. Dont expect others to like what you like and respect their wishes. Something is best because you thought it best is outright dictatorship. Black and white are neutral colors that serve a definite purpose and are beyond any discussion. Ignorance and over-generalization is never a good thing.

Here's one from current OS. Did finish shell theme, but picture is too large to upload with theme. So least can show the picture here and when time permits will upload shell theme and picture will go to backgrounds for Gnome. No more KDE on here, but as Xan said am a flop with those themes anyway! I had to go for more dependability, so I dropped one desktop and am completely satisfied with the performance of this OS so far! Picture shown is the one I see when I log in and all is fairly close in coloring to my orginal 3.8 shell theme for gnome. You know me, when it comes to black and white text, does not exist on my systems or themes! Anyway here it is as have work waiting!

Gnome-shell has severe regressions. Xanayoshi already pointed out about usurping ample memory and this comes at a time when KDE 4.13 has over 10%+ better memory management of RAM and VRAM over KDE 4.11. I admire gtk3 but I really cherish gtk2. Transplanting a soul is an idoitic approach, progressing towards regression.

Gtk-2 in 2014+ ===> XFCE 4.10 + Compton. I cant see how or in which way will Gnome-shell garbage(CSS+ javascript) in anybody's wildest imagination will ever be useful, I mean like ever and up and above all, that too for running a desktop :smashpc . When javascript is already a memory and CPU hogger :roody , eating up clock cycles and incrementing on memory.

GTK2 and no sign of GTK3, that too in 2014.

The entire theme and compositor(Compton) is less than 500KB in size.

Yes, pretty much have to be prepared for which ever way things will go! We know for a fact gtk-2.0 has been successful for many years. So, to forget how to manipulate the looks within, would be a severe oversight, right??? This is one of the reasons have also started to enhance my themes within the gtk-2.0 settings! Am not dismissing gtk-3.0 but am now making better adjustments within the gtk-2.0 settings!

As the smaller devices such as "Smart Phones" are able to use small Ubuntu's within the Android OS that comes with that device, more themes that will be relative to those smaller devices will be sought out a bit more! I never thought about this until a recent venture when I bought a small tablet, which eventually did burn out! Although, I was never able to get the small ubuntu to function on this device before its usability ended, I started to understand others have been successful and wouldn't it be nice to have themes that were usable to them???

First theme that took on this compatibility was CyanaLXDE. I pictured it enough over here so will not bore anyone anymore with it! At first it was greeted very poorly, as no one seemed to understand what I wrote? Now, the rating did go up and shows me some are starting to undertand the concept and value! I was very upset at the poor rating it originally received and felt like dismissing further themes of this nature! After it picked up, I once again realized this all needs to happen as others solely rely only on gtk-3.0. Most theme creators leave gtk-2.0 barely functional and full of terrible looks! I am also guilty of this as I did it in the past! I would solely make the theme great in gtk-3.0 then if one switched to gtk-2.0 right down the toilet went the looks!
Ambiance-Re-Imagined.png
Ambiance-Re-Imagined

KDE, is a nice desktop, but as have said: "I am just not happy with the looks I get on there or the functionality of that desktop!" Got put down on my statement, I find it hard finding things on that desktop! Sorry, all of us have different likes and expectations and no one will ever see everything exactly the same as another! So, for me I stick with the gtk desktops as their menu's are much more appealing and pleasing to me! Same goes for the way I create themes! I find large amounts of coloring and actions very appealing and exciting! If I wanted to be bored stiff, I would simply go back to Windows!

I also found it highly exciting to do a 180 with a few themes others did! One was "Ambiance" and other is "Nissl-Adwaita-Dark", the second being the theme I saw exciting from the time I started using Ubuntu! I call that theme "Nissl-Remix-Replacement" as it replaces the original Nissl-Remix. Is now on Gnome-look for download and offers a much more exciting look on the gtk-2.0 desktops just as CyanaLXDE does! Months ago, I made the statment about the Original Ambiance having problems! That was the reason I decided to work on it and beautify it! When one uses the original theme, the text is not legible on some windows. Now, believe me, when I took it and worked it to death, all text is legible! Of course, I was also downed for that one since I originally called it "Ambiance-Reborn". I began to think the name was terrible so I renamed it to "Ambiance-Re-Imagined". That was a ploy, to fix negative feelings that ran rampant from the original upload!

Anyway, to finally finish this up will add a picture from my LXDE desktop of how this newer incarnation of "Ambiance-Re-Imagined is coming along! With the rest of my themes currently, being redone to affect usability for small devices, it all takes time and am hoping to find some and get these all fixed soon and quickly! Without further adue, here is this new picture of Ambiance-Re-Imagined! The theme is not complete but getting there!

Your claims are your own and you Dont speak for anyone else.

You did not re-create Ambiance. So why did stock Ambiance not work?
Trying to reinvent a stock major theme and claiming yourself to take it to the next level belittles you and I hope you realize this. Colorization of a theme is your enthusiasm and discovery which is very good because it helps you strive harder.

You are a smart person with an IQ above mine. So why make vague 'claims'.

Also stay on topic, every other post is NOT about you making themes.

As far as KDE is concerned you are inexperienced. KDE requires a stable Opengl working environment(versus Gnome) or a passthrough which uses raster graphics using opensource drivers(may or may not be stable, a fact remains every new KDE version is stabler than the previous version). GTK-3 uses Mutter/clutter which depends again on OpenGL or uses a framebuffer passthrough when drivers are not available. GTK-2 uses metacity(GTK+) for rendering.

GTK2 and GTK3 are very different in their functioning.
Ofcourse, when Opengl API's are available and active everything says goto the ---- graphics card.

xfce6.png
XFCE 4.10 because Gnome-shell 3.10 was....blah blah blah.
