A place to make suggestions...

Default development pacakges

Postby stlsaint » Thu Jul 21, 2011 12:20 am

Now i understand this is a minor suggestion but it is something that is sticking with me for awhile now. I wanted to know why dont we just make Ultimate Edition a full development able distro out the box!? :?:

I ask because it seems to be a "half development" environment already. There are some development tools (pbuilder, lintian, bzrtools, etc) that are already installed by default. Also some packages for a kvm environment, (qemu-kvm, bridge-utils, etc) are installed by default? So why not just go ahead and finish off for a full blown development out the box? dh-configure, libvirt-bin, ubuntu-vm-builder, ubuntu-dev-tools, etc, etc!?

Now as far as my understanding goes this will not open any time of security holes and will not call for any resource usage as majority of them are cli based programs? If im missing a bigger picture here sorry!! <BREW>

I dont have thin skin admins nor am i new to this so feel free to lay it on! Nothing like a good discussion! <BREW>

Would you mind elaborating on a few things...

1. So what packages will be added: IE, dev-tools, full kvm, etc? :o

2. Was this addition of these packages already in future plans or was my consideration taking underadvise on this one?? 8-)

1. Awesome it will be greatly appreciated

2. I ask this not in any way trying to gain cool points but to instead show the user base how effective and open this team is to the concerns and wants of the people!! Immediate feedback and action taken on a reasonable suggestion!! Go try that in ANY other distro!!! <BREW>

How about we try something. What would you think would be a Full package? First and foremost any suggestions have to be STABLE thats the key. Everyone should feel free to join in here lets build the dev pack that you as the end users want. Also I would like to state i am a total n00b with Ultimate Edition and *nix in general so bear with me.

For startes lets go with a complete build environment and a full kvm setup. As stated in my original post some of alot of these packages are already default in Ultimate Edition but not enough to be a full dev environment.

Develping envorinment: (particularly for packaging)
build-essential
devscripts
ubuntu-dev-tools
debhelper
dh-make
dh-autoreconf
diff
patch
cdbs
quilt
gnupg
fakeroot
lintian
pbuilder
piuparts

KVM: per the ubuntu wiki
qemu-kvm
libvirt-bin
ubuntu-vm-builder
bridge-utils
