bigpond mirror

Postby msk61 » Sun May 23, 2010 6:28 pm

For Australian users bigpond has added Linux repository's to http://mirror.files.bigpond.com/ubuntu/ .
Is there anyway you could add Ultamatix to their repository's. It would save us aussie bigpond users a lot lot of bandwidth as 'files.bigpond.com' doesn't count towards downloads.

Thanks Shane.

Hi msk61,
I used to organise mirrors on Bigpond when I was a member - I have since moved on to Internode. You can request Bigpond to host any file via request on their download site so I guess if you asked nicely they may accomodate. The choice is totally theirs though.

Cheers.

Hard to explain, but I'll try. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
The 'program' Ultamatix is not the issue, it's the repos and traffic that it uses. It's kinda like Synaptic and the repos it draws from. In order for this to be viable as an unmetered thing, Bigpond would need to host Thee's entire Repository. As an example, Internode and Bigpond mirror the Ubuntu repos, so when I set my Synaptic to draw its updates etc.. from the Internode server, I get them unmetered. Simply hosting the program 'Ultamatix' provides no advantage as what you install with it comes from Thee's repos and as such, end up being metered content for Bigpond users.
Hope that sort of/ almost/ kinda makes sense. :D

P.S. Might change my user name to Mo - easier to spell. ;)

Cheers.
