ok this for me is a bit buggy, but if at all plausible. trying topersonal get my fingerprint reader on my laptop has been my personal vendetta for the past few months. I have the lib pam modules installed via synaptic, but finding and activating the feature has been the pebble in my shoe.

That being said, is their any way to have fingerprint reader software available.

on another note just jumped over to 64bit and UPEK only supports 32bit :o :o (doh!!
anybody happen to have any luck with this issue (fingerprint reader on laptops)?

Thanks in advance as always

Hi,
There's a very easy way to do it, you can easily find howto's online, I've found this one here, I'm pasting the relevant part of it for Ubuntu Hardy based distros such as Ultimate Edition 1.9:
Lunatico from ThinkWiki wrote:Hardy includes the latest thinkfinger and it is up to date with subversion. Install packages:

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install thinkfinger-tools libpam-thinkfinger

Update the pam configuration files:

Code: Select all
sudo /usr/lib/pam-thinkfinger/pam-thinkfinger-enable

Enroll your fingerprint (creates $HOME/.thinkfinger.bir). If this gives an error about claiming the USB device then reboot.
NOTE! Do not try to enroll using 'sudo' - it will cause hidden permission problems

Code: Select all
tf-tool --acquire

Check fingerprint enrollment

Code: Select all
tf-tool --verify

You can expect everything to work correctly. Note that you still have to enter your username if prompted but will be able to swipe your finger instead of the password. The prompt will usually be "Password or swipe finger"

* Graphical login
* Text console login
* sudo
* screen lock/screen saver
* Administrative password prompt (eg for update or package managers). (Note no "or swipe finger" in prompt).

Hope this helps, I suggest you go to ThinkWiki and read more for more information.
Ziv

thank you ziv, will try this out in a few. Had a bit of a problem finding where it might be under, after I had downloaded it with synaptic, so far as how to activate it. Will post back the results in a few mins.
