Well it's been a along time since I have posted here....
This is for the people who really can't afford to much layout for a graphic card....
Bought a PNY Nvidia GeForce 1Gig 210...just to play around with on an old 1 core Emachine T3304...
Mind you did upgrade the ram on it and did pump up the PS to a TR2 600 W Thermaltake....
The old tower ran about the same glxgears as the lappy in the previous post, here are the results.
Mind you I am a Nvidia fan, and you do have to upgrade your tower accordingly!

To run a command as administrator (user "root"), use "sudo <command>".
See "man sudo_root" for details.

dave@dave-T3304:~$ glxgears
29733 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5946.474 FPS
29726 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5945.161 FPS
28639 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5727.628 FPS
29502 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5900.395 FPS
29602 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5920.341 FPS
XIO: fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server ":0.0"
after 42 requests (42 known processed) with 0 events remaining.
dave@dave-T3304:~$
What had surprised me, it ran a Windows game ok

I posted yesterday with one while in 3.0 lite over another members post. Was in FF and took a screen shot of the result of glxgears running over his run, that was wrong and do apologize for that.
Glxgears by no means is a accurate test of a system performance, but it does give an idea how your system runs and when in Compiz how much it takes running in that mode.
My results are:
cowboy@cowboy-System-Product-Name:~$ glxgears
119907 frames in 5.0 seconds = 23981.238 FPS
120185 frames in 5.0 seconds = 24036.991 FPS
120302 frames in 5.0 seconds = 24060.391 FPS
120455 frames in 5.0 seconds = 24090.864 FPS
119884 frames in 5.0 seconds = 23976.777 FPS
120115 frames in 5.0 seconds = 24022.986 FPS
119833 frames in 5.0 seconds = 23966.486 FPS
119957 frames in 5.0 seconds = 23991.272 FPS
XIO: fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server ":0.0"
after 75 requests (75 known processed) with 0 events remaining.
cowboy@cowboy-System-Product-Name:~$
Now the gears running in Compiz desktop:
cowboy@cowboy-System-Product-Name:~$ glxgears
90039 frames in 5.0 seconds = 18007.764 FPS
92379 frames in 5.0 seconds = 18475.666 FPS
90988 frames in 5.0 seconds = 18197.458 FPS
89723 frames in 5.0 seconds = 17944.439 FPS
89514 frames in 5.0 seconds = 17902.621 FPS
92091 frames in 5.0 seconds = 18418.059 FPS
92284 frames in 5.0 seconds = 18456.638 FPS
91826 frames in 5.0 seconds = 18365.126 FPS
91868 frames in 5.0 seconds = 18373.504 FPS
92205 frames in 5.0 seconds = 18440.859 FPS
92000 frames in 5.0 seconds = 18399.853 FPS
90654 frames in 5.0 seconds = 18130.734 FPS
91057 frames in 5.0 seconds = 18211.367 FPS
92013 frames in 5.0 seconds = 18402.572 FPS
92019 frames in 5.0 seconds = 18403.716 FPS
90751 frames in 5.0 seconds = 18150.145 FPS
91692 frames in 5.0 seconds = 18338.309 FPS
