I must reiterate, I am not saying thumbos is bad. I am just saying that yesterday I installed 3 operating systems, one of those being Ultimate Edition 3.8, on a netbook that I am giving to a friend. I used Ultimate Edition 3.5, I used gparted first to clear the usb and reset to a clean ext2 partition. First I wrote diamondllbkde for utilities to set up the partitions the way I wanted on the netbook, then I wrote Backbox to the USB, then Ultimate Edition 3.8, then I finished it all of with another rewrite of diamondllbkde to the USB so the last install would come up first without fidgeting with GRUB. That is 4 live O.S. installs without a single error. So why does everyone hate on startup disk creator?

I should also mention usb-imagewriter as well if you are using SD, although I am not so sure on the status of this program as of 13.04 and above. This is one of the reasons I use 3.5, since as a system for utilizing multiple functions for various installation operations it has become rather invaluable. usb-imagewriter is particularly helpful for SOC that utilise the SD card. Otherwise I just end up using dd and crossing my fingers.

I agree with Xanayoshi.

I see no reason why it should not work with cardbus devices for laptops...if thats what you are using(a laptop).
NOTE: Laptop internal SD card readers do not support booting(AFAIK).

If you are using a usb micro SD card reader, i see little reason for it to not work.....not considering hardware variations/chipsets everyone has a different "Luck".

ThumbOS will see all block devices(disks). A micro SD card is just a variation.

Its a terminal program and has no frontend(GUI).
Become the root user and in the terminal, type:
Code: Select all
thumbos --help

You should get various options on how to use it.

Re: Thumbos - Load disk images to your thumbdrive

Postby BBOSAK2143 » Sun Mar 23, 2014 5:55 pm

Xan, would say the biggest reason is time! Others take a long time. Generally when I used Unetbootin would take me around 40 minutes and same timing for everything else. So imagine when is cut down from 40 to 15?? Now isn't that a great reason to love ThumbOS? Of course, am now considering since Unetbootin also can create the image on the usb drive from a DVD is a good reason, that slows things down a bit. Also brings up another question though! Does anyone ever try to load one of these OS's by DVD anymore???? Will, also say those that do probably have to wait a few hours before all is loaded and done!

Let's face it, these OS's are not even close to simple anymore! So, this is why most everyone has switched to loading by USB! I have tried startup disk creator since Ultimate Edition 3.4 and never once made a correct USB drive yet! Of course as I travel the web, I have seen countless complaints on that one and Unetbootin. So, sure when you get a great utility that saves time and does the job so effectively, you are going to enjoy it immensely! Could be my hardware that is slowing processes down of such, but still there are many in the same boat as I am, that do not have the latest greatest hardware so anything that helps is greatly appreciated! To be honest, you are the only one have heard of that does not have a complaint against those programs and they work for you!

So, count yourself lucky that is works well for you is what am saying. Now, if I need a thumb drive with a reserve will use Unetbootin, but of course in that even usually am not in a hurry, so does not really matter will take 3x the amount of time. Just happy it can do it. Also have to make sure I do not have a CD/DVD in the burners or it will studder. That has been the case with Unetbootin every since I started using it. Would hate to see how long that would take if I tried from DVD to usb!

The SD part would love to hear about if anyone gets it going that way! As said have one of these cheapo tablets so would be interesting to see if some kind of usable system can go on there! Hate to say I really do not see much use of this tablet toy until a more viable system is on there! I think this was a kid's toy something to play little games on instead of anything near useful! So that will become a new venture of mine as want it to be of some kind of use. Really not huge on games anymore! Rather have something like maps and maybe some small writing utilities. As said before, I do not expect it to be a PC, but do want some use out of it! I know strayed from subject, but is close since the SD part is involved. So, yes would love to see that theory reality! Am sure if not for my cheapo will be great for others!

Yeah, no I haven't had any issues with Startup disc creator outside of the fact that it only works with Ubuntu. That alone is lame, I am not against Thumbos, I just don't think that it should replace startupdisc creator as it is rather easy to use, especially if you are making an Ultimate Edition install. Now if Ultimate Edition could get away from Ubuntu that would be great. Thumbos should replace Unotbootin if it replaces anything..but I noticed I still had that on 3.8. yay Speed is not consistent, it takes about the same amount of time with heavy distros, and honestly, if it went quicker I would start getting pretty suspicious.

That doesn't change one thing however, the one thing that is driving me nuts so here we go...

SD=USB USB=SD

It makes me uncomfortable to see all these queries and since they are bleeding over to the social sites let's clear this up a little..

I can get why one might find this difficult so I have pictures...

So here we go,let's take a ride on the SD train...

Need an SD card, I am an Android enthusiast because I know what I am doing but I digress, so let's kill a Droid 2 and pull the card.
thumbos.png

Lots O Droid stuff...

So assuming we have thumbos installed, here is our route

Always a good idea to find out where your card is...
Code: Select all
thumbos --scan
or
Code: Select all
thumbos -s

thumb2.png

After scanning, it looks like we have a card on sdb, notice how much it does not matter that it is an SD card. Almost as if it could totally be a USB.

Now it is a good idea to prepare our card, so let's erase it....we know it is on sdb so we go like this..
Code: Select all
sudo thumbos --erase sdb
or
Code: Select all
sudo thumbos -e sdb

It will prompt you with an areyousure type deal, enter Y or N. For the purpose of proceeding we will choose Y
thumbos2.png

Now we are ready to write. Navigate to where you are storing the image, in this case I will use the latest Trusty daily build, and it will look like this..
Code: Select all
sudo thumbos --load trusty-desktop-i386.iso sdb
or
Code: Select all
sudo thumbos -l trusty-desktop-i386.iso sdb

This too will prompt a yay or nay, so If you want to go forward press Y.
thumb3.png

and now you wait. Depending on the size and hardware it could be either really quick or you should go get some coffee or something. Either way, after it is done, you should have a SD card ready to use for install. This of course also applies to USB because see above.

Xanayoshi, thanks for the mini howto. I would suggest upgrading to 1.0.5 the issues I am seeing with the labels of your drive should have been history since 1.0.4
I would like to cover a few missed features to make it somewhat complete.
  • The help system
  • Test feature

The help system the first place you should go when dilly dallying with any application RTFM comes to mind ;)
Code: Select all
thumbos --help

-t --test test boot device and exit
-v --version dump version info

Thumbos --help [COMMAND] for further information.

Not exactly Information Overload, did you know most programmers have great difficulty documenting thier own software? I am no exception. Let's creep in a little deeper:
Code: Select all

I also added Notifications see top right & sound support. It now talks to you.

ThumbOS checks that you are in a X Windows system if not does not initiate notifications. So it still 100% works for a TTY and no GUI. I have added screen resolution detection as well, if it is 80 columns it will calculate output based on the data retrieved.

I got a 40 hr a week job today that I start tomorrow, so programming and O/S development will now come to a crawl. The Zero byte device is a SDCARD reader. I have considered checking against size and removing the device from the list, however by the time the software starts dropping the info it is pulling the data from an array. It would jack up the time I have to spend writing it tremendously.

You mean it is possible to get better than what it is???? Have used ThumbOS umpteen times is faster than believable and absolutely error free! Nothing comes close to its performance! Is why I love it here, you constantly strive to improve and make Linux enjoyable and not a disaster area! Once again I am going to make this statement since is true! "If it were not for TheeMahn and Ultimate, I would have stopped using Linux!" The reason for that statement is plain to see. You make sense in everything you create and do for Linux. Is the rarest thing in this world to have someone that actually cares and works as hard as you do!!! Always thank you for being there and showing hope and improvement for all of us! You also always provide the motivation for all of us to move forward and do our best to solve problems, help others and create new ideas. This world needs more people like you!!!

That program will probably work on anything!!! I know it blows my mind every time I use it! 15 minutes and that is counting typing the commands for it and is done!!! Still curious at the timing others have had! Of course timing is for my OS that sits at 3.9gb's. That program will always be on every OS I build!! Is simply the best! Is sure also some of the best proof we all have on how great TheeMahn is!!! This is the reality of it all! Anything he puts out I am sure to download as I know it works!!! In my book he still is the best developer out here!!! We are all lucky to have such a great person on our side!!!! Thanks for that always! Am hoping some will give their times on that since I am basing it all on my computer which is ailing a bit with a wore out power supply! Also is not spry no more as was built in '09 so really should have been replaced, but times are tough, stays until can do that!
