One stop have it all...

I am quite famous or is it infamous for writing the only existent USplash maker, well now I have taken things quite a bit further please read on...

I have spent a few days re-writing scripts I have written in the past fixing & enhancing them. I have also written a new one for you Karmic / Ultimate Edition 2.4+ users an XSplash maker. They are all in a nice deb I bring you:

Release Name: Ultimate Edition Nautilus Scripts
Description: A collection of useful scripts that extends nautilus right click functionality.
Dependancies: libnautilus-extension1, python, zenity, libusplash-dev, terminator, startupmanager, ubuntu-tweak, imagemagick

I will eventually take the time and re-write the scripts to remove the dependency on ubuntu tweak (script-worker) libusplash-dev is necessary to make usplashes, some scripts are in python hence the dependency. startupmanager can be called directly for the usplash maker once again why the dependency. None of this the end user needs to worry about, leave this to me ;) The deb will install the dependencies for you.

Current Package contents:
  • Auto Thumbnail
  • Browse as root
  • Convert image to GIF
  • Convert image to JPG
  • Convert image to PNG

I thought to demonstrate the "New" Usplash maker in action. I thought why not use Azenis purple no such thing as a usplash or GDM for it, just a wallpaper that I know of. I created a folder on my desktop called azenis-purple copied the wallpaper into the folder right clicked and let it rip...

USplash maker

MakeUsplash

Note the architecture is automatically detected and added to the end of the .so file

For now please leave all resolutions selected.

Eventually I will use a loop so only selected resolutions are processed & C code will be generated based on the same...

Palleted images ensures a beautiful progress bar... (Thanks redteam)

Install the USplash for me?

Adding to my list of USplashes...

Isn't that nice?

yep.png
Did it work? Yep ;) Fully tested...

Give me a few to finish this post my power supply just arrived... Give me back my Quad core ;) I'll finish it from my machine.

Now I have went and did it, all my work is on the ol' ladys machine for the most part... I am glad to be back up on my machine. Lanshark won't let me grab the files, because root owns them on her machine. I will grab my last post to admin section of the deb extract and continue building ;) Let's continue...

GDM Maker:
please stand by (going to write a separate post for this one), those of you that think the GDM is dead in Karmic, let me wake you up...Johnnyg thanked me 100 times for this one, quoted:
TheeMahn !!! <BREW> <BREW> <BREW> <BREW> <BREW>

Thank you! Thank you! THANK YOU !!!!!! OMG ! Thank you !!!! :D :D :D
Are you going to release this on Gnome-look ? This would make a lot of people very happy ! :D <BREW>

I love Johnnyg, must be my biggest fan ;) Anyways I dropped a script in the admin section and evidently really got his attention, now the world has it ;) Johnnyg, feel free to do with it as you please.

With GDM 2.20 or less you can have beautiful GDM's. With 2.20+ gone, why you may ask? Well the future of GDM's will far supersede that of 2.20. Compiz based OpenGl etc. Unfortunately that technology has not reached us yet. I would also like to point out using the new GDM has opened many issues I will not point a finger at, I try and stay unbiased.

Anyways, Jaunty / Ultimate Edition 2.2 / 2.3 or less have GDM 2.20 and can enjoy the GDM Maker or Karmic using the above link. Lets see this in action. Let's use the same Azenis Purple as used for the USplash to make a GDM:
gdm1.png
excuse multiple entries I am still writing it right ;)

gdm2.png
Yeah, yeah, you just told us that...

gdm3.png
As it says no spaces in the filename as well as what you wish the tar.gz file to be called.

gdm4.png
Self explanatory.

gdm5.png
Be creative ;)

gdm7.png
Wow, even going to allow me to load my newly created work?

gdm8.png
Well that is nice, but does it work?

gdm9.png
Hold the phone... Straight up off the hook.

O.K I have saved the best for last, enter the XSplash maker.

XSplash Maker:
This one is without a doubt very picky as far as the file name as it will build a deb based on the filename (typically lintian error free depending on how long of a description you write) so no uppercase or spaces in the filename.

I will try and not release this until I have Ultimate Edition 2.5 is behind me, it will be built into Ultimate Edition 2.5. BTW now the xsplash maker works :)

Finetuch pointed out the endless possibilities of what I can do with it. If I do release it prior it will be on my tools page (non existent time of posting) on http://themelinux.com When I get time I will come back and finish this post, after all we now have screencasts showing how to use the tools ;)

For those not willing to roll back their GDM, or that are stuck with the newer one and still wanting a solution: checkout https://launchpad.net/gdm2setup.

It is capable of setting most of the changes desired/possible in the newer GDM at this point (unlike the tool that comes with it), has a simple GUI, is available as a PPA so that it can be added to your system updates and is currently a stable release as well as being developed avidly.

We would love testers feedback as well. ...ideas and suggestions for more features welcome!
