Non-LTS releases of Ubuntu will see their support periods halved from Ubuntu 13.04 onwards.

In an attempt to save time, money and effort, ‘regular’ releases of Ubuntu going forward are to be supported for 9 months down from the traditional period of 18 months.

The decision, taken by Ubuntu’s Technical Board in a vote yesterday, March 18th, and carried by a vote of 3 – 0 in favour, will come in to effect with Ubuntu 13.04.

Ubuntu 13.04 was originally announced with 18 months of support. This will now be 9 months.

This length was deemed the most appropriate for users, giving them a 3-month ‘buffer’ period between regular releases.

Wisely the decision won’t be back-ported to previous regular releases. All existing non-LTS versions of Ubuntu will retain their pre-stated support periods.

LTS versions of Ubuntu remain unaffected by this decision. Those seeking stability and support are already encouraged to use LTS versions of Ubuntu.

Looks like they are going to start some daily snaps and give rolling release a try. But if it's based of sid, then scrubbed, then blessed, why not just use sid. It will always be more current in a rolling standpoint, and def more stable, and you know Debian will never sell out to corps. Sorry if offend neone, but I haven't liked ubuntu since 10 dot. They broke my heart when they forgot about the desktop users... Guess I'm just old school and don't like to be limited on my own desktop. I understand though, for Ubuntu it to appeal to everyone, they have to dumb it down a bit and limit users customization. All thats done is create more issues. Ok I'm done...

Seem like ever since 8.10 they have been on a self-mutilating tangent combined with a very sever case of A.D.H.D !

All that together with the news of Compiz maintainer who said he is not willing to cooperate on porting Compiz to Wayland (or any other X.org replacement) and that Canonical is going to drop Compiz too would be the perfect comination for a disaster I think there's a conspiracy championed by Ubuntu to kill Linux

Anything between 10.04 and 12.04 is unusable, so it should not be a surprise.

If they really intend for developers to create games and apps and install them with the same simplicity as windows, then thats a good thing.

Wayland seems really cool to me.After using X which is quite complicated to use, Wayland provides simple mechanism's and API to program with.
Hopefully this should mean excellent graphics support. Wayland allows compositor to talk directly to hardware, kind of a diet version of X protocol, at the same
time being compatible with programs that use and depend on X.

Ubuntu will use Mir display server protocol. Something they are developing for Unity Next and will be included in Ubuntu 14.04LTS.
Most outside developers have criticized Mir, if it dictates its own standard and implementation mechanisms, then its just more 'extra' work for devs and
hardware vendors.
