After trying to like Cinnamon I just can't get my teeth into it just yet. Maybe down the line? I just can't get the customisation I get in Gnome 2. Mate has promise but the whole Ubuntu 11.10 and up leaves me unfulfilled. I don't get the Electronic Lego feeling with it. Know what I mean. The feeling of customizing my Desktop to exactly the way I want it. Then experimenting, crashing it, building it back up, the frustration and triumph in making it truly mine. (just ranting)

I hear ya. I am in the process of rebuilding my system. I have Ultimate Edition 3. Ultimate Edition 2.6.3 and Win XP (gaming) No Gnome 3 or Unity yet.
2.6.3 is my everyday GUI. That being said, I think we have to come to terms with the fact that Gnome 2 has a limited live span. The KDE3 folks tried to hang on as long as they could (I was one of them, but when I "got" Gnome 2 I never looked back)

My new configuration will keep XP (still need it for gaming) and either Ultimate Edition 3 or 2.6.4 (hope!) and a Gnome 3 GUI to try to get used to it. Have to keep moving forward
