Personally for me Mint is a non-starter. There is something about Mint that certain machines/software combinations just don't get on together.
I have tried Mint a couple of times in the past and my 'other' laptop always crashed at some point. That was with an ATI HD3450 card, an up-to-date speedy dual core processor (for that time) and plenty of RAM.
I am on a Sony Vaio of just slightly older vintage than the above Dell I was taking about and so far no crashes, nothing really terrible to complain about just, a little graphics niggle, a missing 'Visual Effects' tab on the 'Appearance' settings app and the fact that if I use the 'Hide' buttons to enable hiding the top panel then, my programmes open with their title-bar hiding beneath the top panel.
I have mentioned this before and in the past it was cured, somehow but, don't know how...
3.0 definitely isn't broken.
3.0 definitely has a few little problems and by the sounds of it, compatibility with hardware may be the problem. I personally don't like or trust Mint to be stable on my system. I will keep it on my Sony Vaio but, it will be removed from my Dell just leaving 2.9 as is, nice and stable.
TheeMahn is obviously stretched time wise and I for one cannot blame him for thinking about himself first.
We must appreciate any version of Ultimate Edition that satisfies our needs without automatically thinking we are entitled to the next version being developed. That is a Microsoft Windows, Apple mentality.
I believe I could use Ultimate Edition 2.9 for the next ten years without any problem if updates are there to match hardware/software evolution. 2.9 does everything I need and want. Packages are available to add new technology as it comes along like mouse gestures and Touchscreens. Sure there will be little hiccups along the way but, like BW says, we are all here to help one another and TheeMahn so that we can have an OS that works for us. If it doesn't work in the version you have installed perhaps there is an incompatibility with your machine somehow. I have seen this myself where I want to use an older piece of kit and expected to 'just use' the latest version of Ultimate Edition but, history dictated that the older system has it's limits and I must respect this.
I believe Mint has it's limits and these must also be respected.
At this point I don't think 3.0 will be worked on for long and as soon as 3.1 and 3.2 come out I feel sure we will be back on a firm footing with very few problems and only small things to be ironed out with each user having different requirements. I mean, look at the versions of Windows that come out or even Apple's OS, they are both catering to the general public with MS trying to be all things to all users and Apple catering much more successfully for media minded users. Ultimate Edition has been developed by TheeMahn and other keen similar minded people with very little financial backing and it caters for a select few like us that want a system we can truly call our own. We ask for things and we sometimes get much more than MS or Apple could ever offer. We ask for things to be done our way and the developers try very hard to make it happen. MS and Apple will hardly ever do that.
Have a nice day...

Just for the record any comments/suggestions in my previous posts were aimed at encouraging newbies.
We seem to forget not everyone is an experienced Linux-user.

Dougal, thanks for thinking outside the box.
Let's toss a little honesty out there in my behalf, which by the way reflects solely my opinion and not that of our fine admin / mods or beta testers. Do not take this wrong in anyway. I opened the doors for other admin to assist in development on the core front of Ultimate Edition 3.0. Remastersys played a hand here, I really understand the nix tree. While remastersys is a great tool to build an O/S for the computer you are sitting in front of, fails in a broadbase construction of an O/S. I did go back and "attempt" to clean up the damage it implored. This is not my first rodeo and I seen the issues immediately and began building packages to reverse the damage.
The amount of damage in just permission problems was large almost irreparable. One may ask, why did I allow for even a second party to enter the picture? I intend to quit building O/S's. I have no problem being the final beta tester if you will. I want to get away from it so I can program. Hmm, lets think. I do not see Ultamatix in Ultimate Edition 3.0, guess what you won't see it in 3.1 nor 3.2 unless I return to development. It gets worse you wont see Ultimate player in 3.2 either unless I spend my time as I would prefer. Totally the tip of the iceburg, I have world changing software I have tossed on the burner to get O/S development behind me.
All people can think about is where is Ultimate Edition 3.0, not my god I use mint, redhat etc. and this dude developed software for my O/S that has made my O/S of choice run absolutely perfect, wont matter what you run. I remind you that is on the burner, please see "Service" section, this will impact the world.

Thank you for responding, sir. That`s what I thought. Pardon me if I say that 3.0 will be my last OS/Ultimate Edition. It simply won`t be the same if you`re not behind the wheel. But it is a wonderful OS.
