Considering how expensive Thunderbolt, AMD recently re-revised its lightning bolt standard to Dockport.
Dockport is displayport that can actually carry USB 3.0 signals and its all royalty free!
Dont care how good or great Thunderbolt is but if the majority of the masses cant have it cheap, that's me showing a finger to Thunderbolt.

Damn, my board has a thunderbolt port. I understand the capabilities, but you are correct the cost is outlandish. Has this hit mainstream?

Dockport is the official standard for DisplayPort as per VESA. The specs are being finalized now(Q214). So a few months uptil Q414, you should see them boards.
It should be released silently with AMD Carrizo refreshed motherboards or even newer iterations for FM2+ motherboards.
WiGig(wireless gigabit) display is also a part of VESA.

As far as AMD CPU's are concerned, the future remains uncertain. AMD should revise the motherboards otherwise they'd be in an awkward situation.
