Advice on desktop build

Postby rocknman » Sat Dec 21, 2013 1:10 am

Hello.
I'm sending this request via Ultimate Edition 2.8 lite (Live CD) on my older 2005 Gateway MX 325 laptop. Since XP support is coming to an end, I've suggested to the owner of our business to get rid of Microsoft forever! We'll keep these laptops for a awhile to run Intuit Quickbooks, but in the mean time I've decided to possibly build a couple desktops from scratch. Also, I love the "look and feel" of this particular edition of Ultimate Edition! I hope it's available on the newer versions. It's gonna take some time for me to fully get the hang of things (mainly command line stuff) because I'm brand new to Linux. My best 3 distros I've tried are Ultimate Edition, Vector Linux & Zorin-OS.
We mainly use the computers for productivity and no gaming at all. Libre Office would be the office suite and we need to use the internet (youtube, etc) plus other minor things like image viewing & editing. My suggested build is overkill (and I know it) but we want the ability to upgrade if necessary without hassle. Your advice, thoughts, opinions, suggestions, etc. is extemely appreciated! If you respond, I'll try to get back with a reply asap. BTW, I have never built a computer before. Many years ago I was an electronics technician in the Air Force and I have a certificate in computer programming, years back also. I feel confident I can do it. Thanks in advance and here's my possible build:
CPU: AMDA10-6800K4.1GHzQuad-Core Processor
CPU Cooler: Silverstone AR01 81.4 CFM Sleeve Bearing (is it really needed...no overclocking?)
Motherboard: Asus A88X-PRO ATX FM2+ (based on the newest socket available)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-2133
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 250GB 3.5" 7200RPM
Case: Thermaltake Chaser A31 ATX Mid Tower
Power Supply: Corsair 600W ATX12V
Optical Drive: Lite-On iHAS124-04 DVD/CD Writer
I plan on looking for a keyboard/mouse combo monitor, possible extra case fan/s other than the above and trying to keep under $600 US dollars.
Thanks again!. I look forward to learning and expanding my life (and our business) around Linux!

Hello and welcome to Ultimate Edition universe, rocknman.
Thank You for your appreciation for Ultimate Edition.

Your system chosen is pretty sturdy. A fine choice. :D
Your components are perfect.
Your CPU cooler and PSU are very important because they last the longest.
Your silverstone cooler is perfect, silent and comparable to a a hyper 212 evo.

Your motherboard supports AMD kaveri. This APU will come into stocks on 14-15th of January and widely available towards the end of January and will replace the A10-6800k within the same price range. It ought to provide anywhere between 20-30% better CPU and graphics performance. So i'd strongly suggest, if you could wait a few weeks to get the new A10-7850K. It has mantle, HSA and hUMA support and can make better use of your RAM.

APU's are designed to be overclocked but it is absolutely unnecessary. Stock performance is very impressive.

Either way your choice which you choose to purchase. Just my 2 cents.

For your APU to work better download and install the drivers from: http://www.amd.com/drivers

For keyboard mouse, wireless works very well these days and Logitech is a good brand but Rapoo has better battery life for mouse(2years).

Hope this helps.

Merry Christmas,
<BREW>

Just want to add as may help with this changeover you are doing. I have a few rants in posts that give some fair help to find things that will work on Linux. Case in point as am not sure if current Ultimate contains pipe-line which links Silverlight through wine and your browser. So be sure to read some of the "Shawn Vs Xavius" posts and others. I just am no fan of Windows, but am a severe fan of Ultimate, unfortunately limitations in download speed prevent me from downloading it at my home! So anything you may need help on if there is not a post, just let us know am sure any of us will be glad to help!!!!
