Ultimate Edition 2.3 compatibility with my custom-build?

Postby Formido » Thu Sep 05, 2013 5:56 pm

My parts-list for my custom-build is nearly complete, and would like someone to look it over to see if it will support Ultimate Edition 2.3. Note this is a legacy-based build, designed specifically to run legacy distro releases. If anyone is interested in assisting, let me know, and I will post my parts procurement list. Thanks.

Sorry for the delay, but discovered that the CPU I had intended to use was not compatible with kernel 2.6.28, so had to downgrade to Phenom X4, which then required changes to motherboards, and so on. Anyway, the following components were chosen to support Ultimate Edition 2.3, or at least that is the intended goal. If I've made any screw-ups in this, please advise what changes need be made. So my parts-list:

CONSOLE~ Either Cooler Master CM Stacker STC-T01-UWK or CM Stacker810 RC-810-SKN1

CPU~ Either Phenom X4 9850 (95w) or 9750 (95w)

PSU~ No idea yet, but I require a quiet one, either platinum or gold grade, 600 to 650w; recommendations welcomed.

MOTHERBOARD~ in order of preference:
GA-MA770-UD3
GA-MA770-US3
GA-MA790FX-UD5P
GA-MA790X-UD4P
GA-MA790X-UD4
GA-MA770-DS3P
GA-MA790FX-DS5

MEMORY~ Depends on which board I can track down, but I want the high-grade sort, & max amount possible.

NIC~ This is backup card, in case of problem with the onboard. In order of preference:
Intel EXPI9301CTBLK PRO/1000
DGE-528T
Netgear GA302T
Startech ST1000BT32

GRAPHICS CARD~ Either Geforce 6800GS or 6800GT (PCIe x16 slot, 256 to 512 MB).

SOUND CARD~ Asus Xonar D2

SATA DVD BURNER~ Thinking about the Plextor-880SA, but open to better options.

SATA HDDs~ Need three for dedicated installs. Either WD7500AVCS or WD7500AAAKS-00BA0

SATA HDD MOBILE RACKS~ Need three for above. Suggestions welcomed.

EXTERNAL HDD DOCKING STATION~ Either Orico 6618SUS-BK or Rosewill RX-DUS100

EXPANSION CARD~ Either Orico PST-2E or Rosewill RC-219, for boards without eSATA.

WIRED ROUTER~ In order of preference:
TP Link TL-R600VPN
Netgear FVS336G
TrendNet TWG-BRF114
CiscoLinksy RVS-4000

UPS~ Either Cyberpower CP1350PFCLCD or APC BR1500LCD

CPU and mobo list are fine and should work with Ultimate Edition 2.3.(No Guarantees. No promises with Asus Xonar, Rosewill and gigabit ethernet(PCie.)
Major driver updates exist from 2.6.32.
Take a look at http://www.kernel.org for longterm kernels. So you might just need to upgrade the kernel and maybe dependencies for it.
The 790 chipset supports a maximum of 16GB ddr2 memory. DDR2 is more expensive than ddr3.
I would recommend personally, Ultimate Edition 2.6.x for this build.

Thanks for the info. I choose Ultimate Edition 2.3 specifically because of its 2.6.28 kernel, so this is what I'm trying to best accommodate. Unless you have any other suggestions for altering this parts list for better support, I'll move on to the next phase-components acquisition. I look forward to test driving Ultimate Edition!

You can get cheap Asrock 970(UEFI) series board with ddr3 support upto 64GB(single dimm 16GB are yet to release to consumer market) and an fx CPU-4300/FX-6300. Or if you can find an older cheaper CPU like athon II x4 645 or phenom II x4 955/965 ..... it would be practically cheaper buying them from the market unless you are getting yours for a killer rate.(PhenomII x6 1090/1100 are still selling sealed boxes, but they are more expensive than an FX-8320).

For a legacy build get a gigabyte 970 board instead of Asrock. Ultimate Edition 2.3 wont have much of any UEFI support for bios.

So thats basically:
gigabyte 970 series + athlon II x4 645/ Fx4300 + ddr3 ram.

I just downgraded from Phenom II to Phenom X4 because I was told any kernel prior to 2.6.30 would not handle it, nor Athlon II, and Phenom X4 was the most recent CPU that 2.6.28 would run on. I'm not buying based on what is cheap. The sole purpose of this build is to support the kernel in Ultimate Edition 2.3, and insure the OS will run on this PC (hopefully at optimal level).

Understood.
I see no problems with the Phenom x4 and 2.6.30.

I was told that to run any distro release that uses a kernel prior to 2.6.30, I'd have to skip the Phenom II X6. In other words, if I want to use Ultimate Edition 2.3, I'd have to switch to Phenom X4, which is the most recent CPU that its 2.6.28 kernel can handle.

Great to hear! Do you have any recommendations for a DVB-S card (PCI or PCIe) that will definitely work with Ultimate Edition 2.3?

I have never personally used a DVB-S card.
But here are some Pci cards:
http://linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/DVB-S_PCI_Cards
and Pcie:
http://linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/DVB-S2_PCIe_Cards

Further docs and info on dvbs under linux:
http://www2.arnes.si/~mthale1/dvb_english.html

Most devices will be built from a few common set of controllers. If you have physical access to the device and if its an open box, you can check the controller version/model and see whether it has linux support....google search.

I have only used TV-tuner cards. Sometimes it takes almost six months for a working stable windows driver/software. For linux it was all plugnplay....way back in 2007.
