Windows Wireless Drivers App misbehaving

This is a new one for me... Ultimate Edition 2.9 64-bit fresh download.

I have a new USB wireless modem and when I click on the Windows driver file that I want to install (through the Windows Wireless Drivers App), I have a window 'Headed Metacity in the Titlebar' thrown up as follows;
"Install Driver Not Responding"
You may choose to wait a short while for it to continue or force application to quit entirely.

Followed soon after by a second window, again Headed Metacity, as follows;
"Wireless Network Drivers Is Not Responding"
- same second line as above -

Now I have to force the app to quit by Alt+F2 and XKill because clicking the cross does nothing but, throw up the messages again.
The second thing out of all this is that the Wireless Drivers app window becomes blank. I mean completely. Even when the app is removed and reinstalled (from the CD or a downloaded .deb file). The only way I have found to recover the app is to go all the way and re-install the system. A bit drastic really and it brings me back to square one.
Now if you guys are going to say to me that 2.9 is no longer supported and help cannot be offered then so be it. I will admit defeat and call time upon my favourite version of Ultimate Edition but, if it picks up my older wireless USB modem without having to manually install a driver then I might just return to my older wireless device.
Any ideas are always welcome.
Thanks for looking...
