Finally got to where I can adjust my resolution by reinstalling the Nvidia driver the second time..for some reason Envy can only install the 169.09..I do have the latest Envy..
My speed was terrible when running the gears while in Compiz..heck of a lot better when in Metacity as the second run shows in the same image..last is the Laptop

Glad to hear it's working for you.
That's real odd that it won't install 169.12. :?
did you look under "install nvidia drivers manually" ?
if the highest it offers is 169.09, yours is different than mine.
I picked mine up yesterday and it offers 169.12
(am planning to update from 100.14.11 to 169.12, will post the difference in FPS)

Ya, compiz really drags it down.
While I love the eye-candy of compiz,
I usually run without it.

Finally got a few minutes of free time
Here is the difference in FPS, between the old & new drivers for 6600GT
***Nvidia-100.14.11***

leadfingers@leadfingers-desk:~$ glxgears
37687 frames in 5.0 seconds = 7537.400 FPS
37803 frames in 5.0 seconds = 7560.564 FPS
37795 frames in 5.0 seconds = 7558.826 FPS
37800 frames in 5.0 seconds = 7559.996 FPS

***Nvidia-169.12***

leadfingers@leadfingers-desk:~$ glxgears
35523 frames in 5.0 seconds = 7104.597 FPS
35644 frames in 5.0 seconds = 7128.675 FPS
35642 frames in 5.0 seconds = 7128.310 FPS
35640 frames in 5.0 seconds = 7127.856 FPS

As you can see The old driver delivered ~6% higher in identical conditions.
Was prepared to roll back the driver if this happened,
was not prepared for how much more detail the new driver delivers.
Was pleased with the performance of the old drivers,
but now everything is "High Def", think I'll keep them. 8-)
