usb storage devices no longer auto mounted in 2.6.3

Postby win2linconvert » Tue Oct 04, 2011 9:00 pm

Been looking for an answer to this for a little while now and figured it's time to break down and ask for help. Ultimate Edition 2.6.3 has stopped detecting usb devices. I had this same issue in 2.6.1 and couldn't figure out how to fix it, so I took the easy way out and just replaced 2.6.1 with 2.6.3 and the problem was solved until today. I am dual booting with Debian 6.x, so I rebooted into it and everything, the drive, the cable, the usb port, is working fine there. so it has to be something in Ultimate Edition I've searched the web for an answer but although I've found others have had the same problem in Ubuntu 10.04, I can't find any solutions. I don't know, maybe I just didn't click on the right link. Anyway, if anyone can help I would really appreciate it. Thanks. :D

Looks like this board has a long history of issues with USB.

Consensus is to reset bios and make sure USB support is set to on in bios.

Other then that it needs to be supported via kernel and firmware.

You might be loosing USB due to firmware and kernel upgrades.

As updates and new kernels / linux-firmware are released and you update would explain why it works and then don't as well.

What I would suggest doing first once bios has been reset and USB turned on in bios is try an older kernel base. What kernel is debian using ? Try something similar ?

Lastly, consider that the hardware has considerably past its recommended life span and could have degraded to the point replacement is required.

Nothing yet. I did find that my /lib/modules/2.6.32-34-generic/kernel/drivers/usb/storage folder is empty. Something else that started happening around the same time as the usb issue that I forgot to mention is that every time I reboot, my visual settings resets to on instead of being turned off which is how I set it. Also, my usb mouse is still working just fine. Alright, I guess I'll just keep working at it.

P.S. As I mentioned before, everything works just fine when I boot into Debian 6.x or when I boot into a livecd, just as it did in Ultimate Edition up until yesterday.

First, I wish to apologize. I had to edit a few posts because I realized I could have used a more tactful approach the first time lol.

Not to many easy ways to tell some one there hardware is and will be an issue due to age.

So forgive my first post lol, I had to step back and try to think of a more tactful way to put it.

Think before you speak shall be practiced better next time.

That said, Can you tell me linux-firware version and kernel version your debian install is running please.

Suspect I can help ya fix this rather easy.

synaptic package manager (or what ever package manager your using) key word linux-firmware

As I thought, the kernel used in debian is considerably older then in Ultimate Edition 2.6.3

Thus the fix will be simple .

We shall just MATCH kernel and firmware build for build and get ya back on track.

Ill link ya the downloads for the debs to downgrade the kernel.

O.K. First I want to thank everyone for their advice. I really appreciate everyone taking the time to try and help me out. The ubuntu help page wasn't quite what I needed. Or else, I just wasn't smart enough to apply the information. The thing that did help was pclinuxguru's advice on changing the kernel and firmware. Thank you all so very much. Not only did you help me get back to using my favorite distro, but I learned something in the process. Win, win. Now if I can only remember it in case I ever need to use it again. Lol. Thanks again.
