Stop using envy. Try this first with the live disc and see if it works. If it does you will have to uninstall the drivers you have installed and try it again or do a fresh install and try it.
If you have a nvidia video card and you want full 3d using a live Ubuntu disc here is how.
Boot up your shiny new disc.
1)Go to Hardware Drivers
2)Install the recommended one
3)Hit Ctrl Alt F1 This stops gdm and opens up a terminal
4)Type sudo nvidia-xconfig This puts the correct lines in xorg.conf
5)Hit Ctrl Alt F7 This give you a desktop
6)Hit Ctrl Alt Backspace This loads the driver
7)Hit Ctrl Alt F7
Now you have full video effects using a live disc!!!!
Enjoy!!!!
If you run sli that's an added step or two............................
sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Add this to the nvidia section after you have done the first 6 steps.
BusID "PCI:2:0:0"
or "PCI:3:0:0"
sudo lshw gives you the bus id info
If this does not work take a picture of your /etc/xorg.conf file and post it.

Try this: Ctr Atl F1
type sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Then you can add the parameters for your monitor that way(you got me on the correct parameters for your monitor-can you change the settings on your monitor?).
It may be fighting with the resolution.

It is going to be trial and error I'm afraid. What I posted should have worked. Try googling samsung syncmaster 226 bw and intrepid and see if you get any joy that way. It is probably something very simple you need to add to xorg.conf or adjust the settings of your monitor. Try plugging you Television into your video card with a S-Video plug(dollar store variety) and see what happens. If it works it is the monitor that is the problem not the video card or driver.

pch...you may want Steffis to try d'ling the nVidia driver direct from nVidia, deselect "Hardware" drivers, uninstall "all" Ubuntu nVidia drivers in Synaptic, restart with the Vesa driver, alt+f1, stop GDM, install d'led nVidia driver, start GDM, ctrl+alt+Backspace, restart GDM, restart system...when all else failed for me before back in 1.7, this worked for me...

I think it's the same driver, Saddle. But it certainly is worth a shot. Having to use the Vesa driver is no fun at all.

The only difference I can think of (if there is one) would be that the Ubuntu version has the 'headers' done by Ubuntu, whereas the d'l from nVidia makes the 'headers' from the "original" driver...

That might just make the difference. Like I said , it's certainly worth a shot.
