Startup-errors / jeopardized graphics after distr upgrade

Postby Erik.Schiegg » Thu Sep 18, 2008 4:36 pm

Hi,

I dared to make the distribution upgrade to hardy 8.10.

Since, beside the announced bugs of the pre-release, my x-server is doing it its own way:

It says to install the latest nvidia-driver

When I do so and restart the computer, the x.conf file is corrupted and I have to reconfigure the monitor manually and so on...

...and no 3D  and no Open Arena  and no Eye Candies :( from my nvidia 8500GT with 512 ram!

I snooped around :ugeek: and found those startup-errors:
Code: Select all
Warning:  Could not retrieve EDID because get-edid is not installed (1)
discover: unrecognized option `--enable-all'

and discover is also throwing errors: discover: unrecognized option `--enable-all'.

:geek: Now I'm looking for a save way to reinstall from scratch my graphics resp. my x server :geek:

(I used to use two Monitors with cool nvidia-configure settings and it worked just fine.)

Thanx for helping a Newbee out of this flooding sand..
(I googled around for some days, befor submitting my problem)

What are you using to install your video drivers??? It looks like your using a different type of installer. You are not being sucsessful at a proper installer for your drivers. Have you tried installing envyng? What about installing the video drivers right from the nvidia site?

Since the upgrade, envy did not work properly. A second envy-icon from a different version is staring at me, since I reinstalled it and it does not work properly anymore.

The nvidia 177 driver is actually downloaded and installed by SYSTEM->ADMIN->HARDWAREDRIVERS.

I can install the nvidia-driver, but nvidia-settings is not recognizing the nvidia-driver and the worst:
when I restart after installing the nvidia-driver, my system falls back to basic graphics and I have to fix the x server during a generic startup.

Inside the session I reconfigure the monitor. If I don't touch anything, it will work (with no 3D) after a restart.
But if I try to fix it by installing the driver again, it falls back to failsave mode in order to fix it and so on...

I can work and watch videos (thus, VLC is rendering the image with coloured ascii chars  , the caca AsCii Art mode), but the benefits of a decent graphics card are wasted...
Image
That's why I tried to install discover and get-edid to help the system to autorecover after a restart properly...

Thanx for your answer.

VLC did that!?!? that is freak'n cool! I've never seen that before! <BREW>
Well, I think that you've gotten yourself into a bad spot now. You prob. should have come in here a little earlier with questions on envyng or even how to install the nvidia drivers off their site. Now it looks like a serious clean up job. If you are willing to undo all that you have done, I will walk you through setting up your nvidia drivers for ya ;)

Heck, a fresh install might be a good option for you as well. You could spend hours doing repair work just to get back to a fresh install spot. (hours - meaning, time spent here in the forums)

I have the same problem.
You don't need to fresh install.

The problem with get-edid can be fixed by typing
sudo apt-get install read-edid

As far as the discover problem is concerned, i think that someone typed
discover --enable-all
when they were supposed to type
discover --enable-dbus all
Its probibly in a shell script somewhere. I am going to look for it later today.

Yeah, VLC is playing all the movies in coulered AsCii-Art. Kinda Matrix 8-)
Same thing during a logout with the spashscreen/progressbar..but here rather ugly :o

I still can't install read-edid:
Code: Select all
erik@erik-desktop-AMD64x2:~$ sudo apt-get install read-edid
[sudo] password for erik:
Paketlisten werden gelesen... Fertig
Abhängigkeitsbaum wird aufgebaut
Lese Status-Informationen ein... Fertig
erik@erik-desktop-AMD64x2:~$

(package read-edid is not available, but is referenced by a different package. This could mean that the package is missing, is depreciated or is only available by a different source.
E: package read-edid has no installation candidate
In short:  fuk of  EOF)

But I'm gonna try to fix the discover-script. A big thanx anyway <BREW>

A reinstall from scratch might be the only serious fix, as Daddy sais.

Maybe I try before that to write manually the x.conf file of the x-server.
And indicating better/appropriate software-sources may fix the problem with read-edid...

...I'll feed-back news. A farewell to the kingz of :D ubuntu-ultimate-there-is-no-better-edition :D
