Hi Guys,

I haven't got my new computer yet but I have made a decision to wait for the new 1151 boards to come come out. (I'm unsure if this is a good idea or a bad one.) I am wondering will the new Skylake cpu's be fine on Linux and will there be any issues with having two GPU's? As with Laptops hybrid GPU's are no good with Linux (in my experience) but with a desktop is this a issue?

Thank you in advance.

Linux runs fine with SLI.
Problem is games(steam) dont support SLI on linux...this was 2 years ago.
SLI has no practical benefits besides giving you smooth desktop experience and video muscle and multi-monitor..
monitors in excess of 5 to 6 or more....multi monitor has nothing to do with SLI(or maybe Im WRONG.)

AMD crossfire solutions work pretty well too, but again is useless.

There is a catch.. if you use Blender3d software for 3d work/rendering then it will use all the CUDA cores that
it can detect, not as in SLI but the cores available and that way can boost your performance....and this configuration
is used by blender pros.

THat being said, buying multiple GPU's to run linux can be a waste a money, unless you want to get a kick by
just seeing what happens.

Skylake CPU's to my knowledge are an SoC. They are a new direction taken by Intel.
Wait for benchmarks and stability tests done after the CPU gets released.

If you are going for a laptop then the new AMD carrizo parts are pretty amazing and is targeted towards media enthusiasts
who use a lot of image and video processing software.

The hybrid laptop setup is much different than a desktop setup. You should only need one GPU for Linux, and if you are buying the latest Intel chip, you might not even need that, depending on what it is you do. For virtual use, I might stock up on all the RAM.

I think as long as the SOC Skylake supports Linux it will be pretty gosh darn cool, which it will, but will probably be mostly used for some horrible Surface type thingie. It would still be cool, but the desktop chips are the next generation as far as I know, and should have kernel implementation day of release. Open source and Intel has a rocky past but all I have is Intel so can not really compare chips. I can literally move drives from one computer to another and boot and that makes me happy.

But what's really important is Fallout 4, so that setup sounds just about perfect.

I agree with Xanayoshi, you will not have a stable or a functional system with linux as far as the hybrid graphics is concerned. Only
the integrated graphics works well with AMD laptops. Catalyst is obnoxious.
I have managed to recompile the kernel with flags to get AMD dual graphics(catalyst) working/functional without errors and it took me 2 weeks.
Stupid thing to do when AMD cant afford devs to look after the linux side of things....where is OpenCL ...nowhere in sight.
