Is this the best LTS to replace 3.8 with?

Yep. I dusted off the old linux partition, and even got a few things working that had me stumped before, but there's really no point in trying to figure out how to make and keep it current. While I'd like to keep what I've already set up, I know this is more trouble than its worth and I have faith that when it comes to Ultimate Edition, newer is actually better. My first question is, is this a LTS version? Also, of those to choose from that are LTS, which would be most similar to 3.8 in feel? Is there perhaps something even better? Thanks in advance for your time and assistance.

I can't remember what 3.8 looks like.. But you can try either 4.2.4 which is mate and lts which is what I use.. Or go with the new one 5.0. Some recommend XFCE version I prefer Mate myself.

It looks like this is also Mate. How long has 4.2.4 been out and how long is it's LTS lifespan? Does 5.0 have Mate? Thanks! <BREW>

Also, I don't have a USB thumb drive but I do have an external USB hard drive. Can I set that up (with Unetbootin or w/e) with a live ISO and use that to install, or do I have to get a thumb drive? (Asking because $ is tight!) If I can use my external drive, I want to somehow squeeze linux onto my newer desktop too! The SSD (C: in Win) is full so it would have to go on the second or 3rd internal hard drive. Is that going to be a problem? (My gut says No!)

My apologies for so many questions.

EDIT

Well, my cousin has loaned me his thumb drive. I can also answer some of my earlier questions. Yes, 5.0 is LTS and yes, it has Mate. UNetbootin is putting the ISO on the borrowed drive as I type this... I will be replacing the 3.8 partition so I am keeping my fingers crossed and also have my other computer standing by to log in and perhaps find someone in IRC should I run into problems. The worst that could happen is that I lose both Windows AND Ultimate Edition 3.8 right? (No room anywhere for proper backups, living dangerously!)

The main question that still remains is whether or not I can install 5.0 to my 3rd internal hard drive on that other machine. (At least until I am comfortable enough with it to reformat the SSD and give it a permanent home there!)

EDIT

Installation wasn't perfect, but I muddled through and now have a fresh copy of 5.0 where my 3.8 used to be! Now to get everything set up...

Freed up some space on the tower, too. ;)

OK, I have a specific question about the weather app on the top panel. On 3.8 it would display notifications about every 5 or 10 minutes which was fine. In 5.0 it displays notifications approximately every minute, which is quite annoying. I've looked to find how to fix this, but I'm at a loss...

It could well be a bug:

See the updated release of official 'buntu mate which fixes weather issues which I suppose was one of the issues - have you done a full update after install? Have you changed your software update settings to 'Main Server' instead of your Country's Local(e) Server? ;) :D
