no network connection after 3.8 install

I have installed UE3.8 on my Dell Dimension E521/ 4 gigs Ram/Amd Atlon 64x2 3800+/ I dont know what vga card it has in it. But whatever network is built on the MB there seem to be no drivers installing. I had previously also tried installing Ultimate Edition 4.3 to no avail. I ended up with a black screen and mouse pointer with no other activity. If anyone can help me to get my Ethernet connected I would appreciate it. Of course I can do no updating or other such things as I have no Internet connection.

Well somehow you did connect to the internet and write this post...

A simple google search for your Dell reveals its a Broadcom ethernet controller...
Now, here's what you can do:
1> Im not sure whether you are able to use your Fujitsu or Dell to be able to connect to the internet. So Im assuming you are NOT able to connect.
2> This means that you have to be able to somehow connect your system/s to the internet just so to get the ethernet running.
3> So now you can do 2 things:
a> Get a cheap branded ethernet card. Most off the shelf retail cards have commonly used chipsets that should support
linux. Dlink is good brand. But I cant guarantee you results because I use wireless even for my desktop.
b> Get a wireless usb dongle. They cost about the same as a gigabit ethernet card...which for a long term investment is
very cheap. A plug n play wifi N dongle is the Dlink DWA 131(this one should work) or for a bit higher priced the
TPlink WDN3200. These should be plug n play under Ultimate Edition. Most Dlink dongles should be plug n play with Ultimate Edition.

So basically you need an alternate method to connect to the internet just so you can connect again to the internet using the default(Broadcom) device.

Now, once you are online with the secondary method, you can try this quick method to install drivers for Broadcom ethernet...
Open terminal and become root and then type:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install linux-firmware-nonfree

Once completed, REBOOT.
Plug in your CAT cable and check connection with your ethernet card...

Pam, Thank you for your suggestions. I happen to have a n smc gigabit Nic extra here so
I plugged it in and it was recognized right away and walla I am on the network/internet.
I haven't had the chance to install the other drivers, but I will attempt it today. I appreciate the help. Now I just need to get Ultimate Edition installed on my laptop and I'll be all set. Thanks again!! i really appreciate the help. Do you happen to know why the broadcom devices have such poor support within Ultimate Edition? They seem to be very commonly used in so many desktops and laptops?

Nope. Hope the solutions work for you.
Broadcom wifi devices have this problem since 5 years. Dont know about newer devices. But their pcie ethernet cards on motherboards have sturdy drivers like any other.
