How do you enable hibernate?

Postby newbi462 » Thu Jan 03, 2013 10:34 pm

How do you, or where is actual true hibernate hidden?

I am not talking about the SLEEP that is enabled by default I am taking about suspend to disk to the laptop actual turns off and is still good even if it goes completely dead of power.

This is a very useful and seems to be missing feature, I would like to know how to add it?

There are multiple guides on the forum, all attainable by using this built in feature. :)

I tried the "sudo pm-hibernate" but it fails the first time time 2 it produces some error -19 in something and halts the system, but not in a way that will restore...

so something is wrong, I have no clue what.... so should I post on that thread or this one to trouble shoot why it is not working?

Major key in hibernation is that you must have atleast the same amount of swap space as you have ram for it to function properly. So if you have 4GB of Ram you must have 4GB of Swap. Most likely why sudo pm-hibernate command doesn't work. But i am interested in knowing if this helps? If you do add more swap and it isn't partially full and there is indeed eneough room for hibernation, try command again. If that works just continue to edit your pkla file. Plus have a look here on how to installation tuxonice if you are interested.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tuxonice/ppa

sudo apt-get update
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install tuxonice-userui linux-generic-tuxonice linux-headers-generic-tuxonice
Then try again

sudo pm-hibernate

Well I'd have to say it would be rediculous to have a swap thats 16 GB. But you can check opening the system monitor and looking under resource tab. Or opening any disk part editor and looking there, ex gparted or disk utility. Have a look here for some more input https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PowerManagement/Hibernate

on the

sudo -s
echo platform > /sys/power/disk
echo disk > /sys/power/state

Or:

sudo -s
echo shutdown > /sys/power/disk
echo disk > /sys/power/state

do I put the 3 lines in one comand or do each by its self to test that .... think I almost have to do as one comapnd on one line or wont be able to do ther third?

This seems to be a popular fix for some. Install gedit if you don't already have installed
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install gedit

Open /etc/default/grub with text editor
Code: Select all
sudo gedit /etc/default/grub

look for this line :GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="
Change it to :GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="acpi_sleep=nonvs"
Close and save, then run
Code: Select all
sudo update-grub

Code: Select all
sudo update-grub2
