I notice that Glxgears runs 2.3x better on KDE than Gnome Classic. Anyone else?

im guessing you are running open source drivers.
When i tried it, it didn't work correctly.
AMD driver efforts are more concentrated towards llano and trinity at the moment.
My use of a trinity notebook didnt yield much in terms of stability with amdccc 12.8. Although i had all functionality until i read 12.10 solves the issues(but amd doesnt care for glxgears nor compiz) :th_shucks .The objective is amplified framerates with absolute functionality.
The open source drivers are highly stable but with quarter of the functionality.

Try installing the drivers from amd's website and see how that stacks up against the open source. You viewpoint may completely change.
