Cannot find Update Manger in Ultimate Edition 4.2

Postby Aw Man » Fri Jul 11, 2014 9:58 am

 I am new to Ultimate Edition. I just installed v4.2 and in the process of getting everything setup and getting updates. The problem ... cannot find "update manager". I find the software & updates configure tool but no update manager specifically. So where is it?

It may not be there. Generally all the Update Manager does for Ultimate Edition is take an Ultimate Edition distro and make it either Ubuntu or make it broken. Mostly broken, and I mean..reallly broken. If you know your way around Linux this may not be the end of the world but if you are looking for the update manager this in itself does not bode well.

I will download and install it and try to come up with something more clear as to what options are to be had, meanwhile..

To actually "update" your sources you can open a terminal
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get update

And now, the completely true facts, as told by an anonymous man hiding behind a screen name:

Packard Bell Pack Mate II 286 Intel 80286 1MB RAM

Hopefully there will some form of update manager in the near future. I prefer to perform updates manually rather than automatically. I did the same thing when I was using Windows and, do manual updating in my copy of Ubuntu 12.04.4.

The easiest way to do an update would be from the terminal, as in the example Xanayoshi gave in that post. Another way to do an update would be to open up Synaptic Package Manager. From the panel click on System, mouse over Administration, then goto and click on Synaptic Package Manager. Once it is open click on Reload. When it is done, click on Mark All Upgrades, then click Apply. From that point it may ask you if you want to apply any changes. Now, depending on what you are updating, you are going to have to decide weather or not to apply the changes. One thing about Synaptic Package Manager is, you can see what it`s asking you to update, and that can be helpful, but take care in using it.
I have found that using the terminal is the easiest way to update your system.
Open the terminal, then enter:
sudo apt-get update
Dell Studio XPS 9100 Quad Multi Core
Intel Core I7 CPU @ 3.20GHz
12 GB 1333 DDR3 RAM
2TB Western Digital HD, 500GB Western Digital HD (secondary drive)
NVIDA GeForce GTS 450

OS: Dual Boot- Windows 7 (64 bit) & Star Sapphire(64 bit)
