boot issue

Been using Ultimate Edition 4.2 for a while now with few issues. This morning when booting, the splash screen appears and then the screen shows a terminal logon page. I can login with my user name and password but have no idea what to do next.

I worked in virtualbox a little yesterday but don't think that is the issue. I can boot from a live CD and access most folders (except the ones I created).

What happened and how do I fix it? Can the OS. Be started from terminal? Thanks for your help.

I installed wine, playonlinux and gparted. But all seemed fine until I tried to boot the next day. As far as backing up my files, I cannot copy any folders in my home folder that I created only those that are defaults. I keep getting a "you don't have permission to access this folder" message and the folders have a lock icon at the top right of the folder.

What about the boot repair program in control center. Or the repair program in the advanced function at the CD startup menu?

I'm only able to boot up with the live CD. It says nautilus is not installed. I tried 'sudo apt-get install nautilus' but to no avail. Any ideas on using boot repair or the rescue app (live CD) at boot?

However,it seems that if I open my home folder as admin and then open the folder on the backup drive as admin that I can copy files with impunity. I still need to fix this if possible after I backup my files. I had a sweet system set up and don't want to have to redo it!

Where is it failing at boot? Nautilus is now "File Manager" or something along those generic lines. Caja is the file manager for Mate, so..sudo caja, or just login as root. When you have superuser, change the permissions of the files manually--Properties

Thanks. Managed to get most of the important stuff copied but still working on a boot solution. I tried the boot repair function in Control Center. It didn't seem to work......

Also, is there a 'kernal file' like the old Windows boot.ini? Do you suspect something may be wrong with whatever file or script is responsible for booting?

After some digging, it appears that a problem with my X11/Xorg files may be the issue, Ctrl-alt-F7 does nothing but cause a blinking cursor and the comp still boots into tty1. Should I re-install the Ubuntu desktop?

Looks like this one is a lost cause - unless someone can provide step by step instructions as to how to install the driver for a Radeon HD 8400 card.

I prefer much too often this solution: http://www.supergrubdisk.org/ , maybe there is an alternative, to log in from a live disc and
Code: Select all
sudo update-grub2
but its complicated, try the disk.
