Ultimate Edition gamers ed. and PAE (Solved)

Postby uenuubguy » Sun Dec 02, 2012 9:34 pm

Hey ya'll, I'm a sort of linux newb and also have never used Ultimate Edition before. I'm thinking of downloading the Gamers Edition, but I don't know if my cpu (AMD A8-3870K) will support PAE-I believe Ultimate Edition Gamers uses it-and I wish to utilize my 8GB of RAM. Is there any way to find out if my cpu will work? Oh, Wikipedia is what says for Linux to use PAE you must have a compatible cpu.

Hi uenuubguy

if you are using Ultimate Edition gamers 3.0 which is a 32 bit distro you will need to install the pae kernel ...........

Older Ultimate Edition gamers like 2.6 also have 64 bit option.........

Installing the pae kernel is pretty straighforward..........first install which one you want and then we'll guide you how to install the pae kernel....

Actually I don't even have the cpu for my computer yet, it should be arriving by UPS in the next few days. It is a 64 bit cpu, so I was really wondering if it would support PAE so that I could run 32 bit Ultimate Edition Gamers 3.0 with 8GB RAM. Yes, I did see that you could download Ultimate Edition Gamers 2.6 64 bit, I may go with that, or even Ultimate Edition 3.5, but I was just curious as to whether I could run a PAE 32 bit kernel on a 64 bit system, just so for gaming I could use all 8GB of RAM (also to arrive soon).

Shouldn't be an issue or even require any intervention on your part. If you have more than 4GB RAM the pae-kernel will automatically be installed by default when installing the OS. But we are here to help regardless...
