nOOb question

Postby deate » Tue Dec 18, 2007 10:08 am

I jsut installed this distro (1.4) and am new to linux. Software updates available 144. How do I know which I need, as at my current download speed (on satellite supposed to be 65KB/sec but actually 30) would take 4 hours to update. Is there a faster way to update, or should I just update critical updates?

There is somany updates, because 1.4 hasn't been rebuilt since it was first made. TheeMahn will correct me if I'm wrong, but 1.4 was like 4-distro's ago and I don't think he reconstructs them more than once or twice - till he gets them just perfect then he stops & moves on to the next distro :D The only option you could take, would be to install 1.6 the latest release ;) I think that any-way you look at it, your looking at downloading updates, but the newer the release the less updates you'll need.

Ok...I get that, I had hoped that I could install 1.4, the upgrade it to 1.6, without so much downloading. Is it better just o buy a disc of 1.6 and do a fresh install? By the way this distro is awsome, and just what I've been looking for. It seems that it will be easier to get to where I want to be with out all of the fuss...some of us just don't have the skills yet to be proficient with linux, and this distro seems that it will be easier to addapt since so much is already installed( compiz)

Yes, maybe in your case it would be better to buy a disc and install that way, its the only way your going to get rid of some of that download time.

Where can I buy the disc for 1.6, that will help support this distro? I believe that I read that the author is building a site for sales, but it is not finished...Maybe I'll just wait a while and buy directly from his site????

The maker of Ultimate Edition has nothing to do with the CD's / DVD what so ever! TheeMahn is not affiliated with them at all. He sells nothing to make money, except advertising to keep his forum and sites up ;) I can not verify that the CD/DVD's that you will obtain will be working or not and how new of a release they will be. There has been some changes with TheeMahns repository and build of the 1.6 edition and couldn't tell you if the CD/DVD's sold are of the latest build, sorry. You can see a solution HERE
