[SOLVED]screen issue with some games

Postby Palemoon » Tue Nov 25, 2008 11:18 pm

I am experiencing some issues with certain games in Ultimate Edition that I haven't experienced in other distros. During game play, the game will go from fullscreen to windowed. Normally not a big deal, but the keyboard and mouse stop working as well. The only way to get back is to hit the power button on my system, which brings up the Ultimate Edition shutdown menu. Then I can cancel that and the game will go back to fullscreen. So far, it is mostly with the games Urban Terror and Americas Army.

Has any one else had this issue? Those games ran fine under the other distros I used prior to Ultimate Edition.

Did you remember to disable Desktop effects before you started the game?
System/ Preference/ Appearance... Select Visual Effects... Select none
This will, in effect, disable Compiz so it won't eat up resources or interfere with FPS.
Always wise when dealing with anything video intensive.
1st Box: Ultimate Edition 2.0 x64/ 1.8 x64
2nd Box: XP (dusty)
3rd Box: Stable Media box Ultimate Edition 1.8 x64 with XBMC

No I didn't. I guess I can try that. I never had to disable it with other distros though.

The main two that I used before Ultimate Edition were openSuse and DreamLinux. The games all played fine under those distros...without disabling anything.

openSuse is totally different. Dream Linux uses an older kernel so things will be different as well.
Because Ultimate is based on Ubuntu 2.0 Intrepid, many of the same bugs will still be there. One person creates this distro with no finacial backing(and very little help). All the Admins and Mods also are volunteers. We do not have all the answers as to why you are having issues.
Ultimate includes many extras that are not included with other distros so of course it requires more ram and a better video card to have all the goodies running at the same time.

Yes I am aware there are differences, and with DreamLinux (which has like 4 devs and no financial backing either) I was actually using a newer kernel (i.e. not the one that came with it.). While Ultimate Edition does include more extras, I was running pretty much the same extras under DreamLinux that I installed manually. The only difference I see is Gnome. I think my system can pretty much handle any distro out there (dual core, 4gig ram, high end video card, etc.)

BTW, I disable all the effects as suggested and the problem still happens. I'll mess with it some more and attempt to track it down...Thanks.

Problem solved! Somehow I had loaded an older driver for my video card. I loaded the newer driver and all is well. Thanks for the replies and suggestions...
